Hull's Haven Border Collie Rescue is, in reality, an all breed rescue based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, that was established in January of 2006.
We have always taken great pride in being fiscally responsible, and never operating in the red. Now we end 2015 with a wave of extremely high vet bills due to serious surgeries, heart worm treatments and various other costly vet expenses.
We have Katie Bear, a beautiful black Lab who has been in rescue almost her whole life, just over a year. She is fearful due to the terrible way she saw her littermates die. Katie requires a costly surgery to repair her torn tendon on her back leg. Estimated $2500.
There is Spirit, a tiny little Husky who spent most of her life on a chain, or having puppies. She was terrified of all humans, and in the course of a few months, has been learning to trust, sleeping on the bed of the foster mom, and enjoying being able to run free through the fields.
She was spayed and had her regular vetting plus antibiotics for a skin infection.
Unfortunately, she suffers from luxating patella and when she is standing she refuses to put weight on her leg, clearly showing pain. Once again, she has to be put under and this time the orthopedic surgery is estimated at $1200.
Sweet Buddy, the most wonderful Australian Shepherd, came into care weighing a whopping 178 lbs! He was so obese that when he walked he would literally turn purple and blue from the exertion. Buddy's owner loved him very much, but he was not well, and did not understand what he was doing when he overfed Buddy.
Buddy was taken into foster by two very special foster moms who have helped him lose over 103 lbs! The weight caused Buddy to have a massive amount of excess skin that was causing him problems, so it had to be removed. This surgery also cost HHBCR $1200, (partially covered by donations)
The next dog is Logan, who was rescued from Fisher River. Logan came into rescue heart worm positive. Heart worm treatment is extremely expensive, around $800, plus follow up appointments. Heart worm dogs stay in foster care a long time so they can recover.
Once Logan recovered, he was neutered and had his vaccines etc.
While in care, Logan's foster noticed he was limping, and x-rays revealed an old injury requiring femoral head ostectomy. This surgery is estimated to be $1100, plus follow up.
McKinley too, was rescued from Fisher River. McKinley is a German Shepherd, tiny for her breed, with a heart of purest gold. Once she loves you, she loves you completely, and you cannot help but love her too.
McKinley had previously given birth, all alone, and watched as people took her puppies away one by one, and left her there to fend for herself. A dog loving friend from Fisher River called us, and said she was there again, and very pregnant. We took her in, and she tested positive for heart worm. She later had five darling puppies. Once she has weaned them, she will have to under heartworm treatment, and get spayed etc. This is approximately $1200. (some donations received)
Gandalf is a senior forever foster who was really dealt a bad hand. When he arrived a few years ago, his x-rays showed a dog who has suffered serious injuries from a car, and was forced to heal without vet care. He has some lypomas that need to be removed, and we are looking at appromixately $500.
Montana is a darling little red and white Border Collie that came from...you guessed it, Montana. She is mostly blind in her right eye from blunt force trauma. She had already had many porcupine quills removed her face, but once she came into care, some that were missed began to infect. Montana had to be sedated to remove them. The cost there was $280, plus her spay surgery today (December 9th).
So as you can see, Hull's Haven is struggling and needs your help.
Our goal is $7500 by Christmas.
In exchange for your kindness and generosity, we are going to share a story with you, written by Sally Hull, the founder of HHBCR.
We will share part of the story right now, and when we get to $2500, we will share more of the story, and more at $5000, and the end when we reach our intended goal.
Please share and share, because if enough people are reached, even at $5 each, we could easily make our goal!
Thank you, and may 2016 find fewer homeless animals and more love and respect for our fellow beings.
