Wir benötigen 10.000 € für unseren in Notlage geratenen Freund im Libanon

Was ist passiert?

Omar Sfeir aus dem Libanon musste im Februar 2026 in Beirut an der Schilddrüse notoperiert werden. Ein paar Wochen später entzündeten sich seine OP Wunden mit einem multiresistenten Keim und er musste erneut ins Krankenhaus.

Von den 10.000€ sind 7.150 € direkte medizinische Kosten. Der Rest überbrückt hoffentlich 2 Monate Genesungszeit — Miete, Strom, Nahrungsmittel, Zeit für erste Jobs, einen kleinen Puffer für Unvorhergesehenes.

Wir sind Stefanie und Lucia.

Wir haben Omar unabhängig voneinander bei Auslandsaufenthalten kennengelernt. Stefanie 2016 über Erasmus in Griechenland und Lucia 2019 in Beirut, als sie dort gearbeitet hat.

Wir haben in ihm einen wunderbaren Freund gefunden, der uns teilweise seit einem Jahrzehnt durch die Höhen und Tiefen unseres Lebens begleitet. Omar hat nicht nur unser Leben, sondern das vieler Menschen bereichert. Durch seine Arbeit als queerer Filmemacher und Fotograf gibt er den Menschen in seinem Land eine Stimme. Vor allem jenen die dort (und hier) unter Diskriminierung leiden, und ohnehin schon vulnerabel sind.

Anders als in Europa gibt es im Libanon kein öffentliches Gesundheitssystem.

Die Kosten müssen zum Großteil von den Patient:innen selbst übernommen werden. Als freiberuflicher, queerer Fotograf und Filmemacher sind die Einkommensmöglichkeiten im Libanon ohnehin schon herausfordernd. Vor allem jetzt. Für Omar gibt es gerade keine Möglichkeit, gesund zu werden und gleichzeitig die Rechnungen zu begleichen.

Was passiert mit den Spenden?

Im Libanon ist es nicht möglich, Geld über diese Plattform zu sammeln, weshalb wir von Deutschland aus diese Kampagne starten. Die Spenden erhält zunächst Stefanie Blank (Beste Freundin von Omar) aus Mönchengladbach direkt von gofundme.

Danach werden die Spenden außerhalb von gofundme, aber zu 100 % auf das Bankkonto von Omar Sfeirs Schwester Youmna Sfeir weitergeleitet. Das Konto ist bei der Audi Bank (Wise). Dies ist eine gängige Methode, um im Libanon Geld zu empfangen, da hier kaum Gebühren anfallen. Lediglich bei der Umrechnung von Euro in Dollar können Gebühren von ca. 0,41–0,50% entstehen, also bei 10.000 € ca. 41–50 €.

Wir können die Situation im Libanon nicht ändern. Aber wir können jemanden helfen, der anderen eine Stimme gibt, selbst wieder sorgenfreier gesund zu werden.

Stell dir vor, du bist jung und hast das studiert, was du liebst.

Du bist Mitte 20, bekommst die ersten Jobs als Filmemacher und Fotograf. Du bist kreativ, voller Lebensfreude, die Menschen arbeiten gerne mit dir.

Dein Leben ist laut. Doch dein Land ist seit Jahrzehnten eingefroren.

Korruption und Wirtschaftskrise. Die Ersparnisse deiner Mutter auf der Bank, über Nacht einfach weg. Im Herbst 2019 reicht es. Hunderttausende gehen auf die Straße, gemeinsam. Ihr nennt es „Thawra", die Revolution. Eine Fotografie von dir geht viral, als Sinnbild für die Hoffnung all derer, die protestieren.

Dann ist es 2020: Die Pandemie setzt die ganze Welt in Stillstand.

So auch dich, und dein Land. Im März verliert das libanesische Pfund über 95 % seines Wertes. Du findest kreative Lösungen. Da müssen wir eben alle gemeinsam durch.

Im August fährst du von einem Job nach Hause, als es knallt.

Plötzlich steht dein Auto auf der anderen Straßenseite. Du steigst aus, leistest erste Hilfe. Eine gewaltige Explosion im Hafen. Ein Teil deiner geliebten Stadt liegt in Schutt und Asche, mitten in einer Pandemie. Später tanzt du mit Freunden auf einem Hügel: Wir leben! Wie wunderbar!

Und inmitten all dem Chaos machst du weiter deine Kunst.

Filme, Fotografien. Über Nähe zwischen Menschen, über Queerness, Resilienz, über Menschlichkeit. Du zeigst, wie das Leben im Libanon auch ist.

Mit 30 darfst du deine Arbeit in der Schweiz und Deutschland zeigen. Dann bricht Krieg aus.

Zurück in der Heimat ist nichts wie vorher. Die Menschen sind erschöpft und so auch du. Deine Freunde verlassen das Land, wenn sie können. Oder es verlässt sie der Lebensmut. Seit Jahren bist du angespannt. Ihr seid kollektiv angespannt. "Generation Dauerkrise", nennt Arte deine Doku.

Einmal werden dir deine Kamera und andere Wertsachen gewaltsam entwendet.

Du wirst im Krankenhaus behandelt und bist traumatisiert. Doch du kämpfst dich raus. Wieder.

Frühjahr 2026. Erneut Krieg. Erneut Bomben. Erneut abgesagte Jobs.

Ein heißes Gefühl im Hals. Dein Cortisolspiegel ist durch die Decke. Die Ärzte sagen, es ist der Stress. Die Schilddrüse muss sofort raus. Du erzählst niemandem davon. Deine Mutter hat gerade ihren Job verloren. Die Krankenversicherung übernimmt 20 %. Kaum draußen suchst du nach der nächsten Möglichkeit Geld zu verdienen.

Nach ein paar Wochen plötzlich:

Fieber, Schüttelfrost, Schweißausbrüche. Du liegst im Bett und hörst Drohnen. Zurück im Krankenhaus. Bakterielle Infektion der OP-Wunden, vermutlich ein multiresistenter Keim. Die letzte Rechnung ist noch unbezahlt.

Bis hierhin hat Omar sich immer selbst wieder hochgekämpft.

Immer eine kreative Lösung gefunden. Immer weitergemacht — für seine Kunst, für seine Community, für die Menschen, denen er eine Stimme gibt. Aber jetzt ist das erste Mal, dass sein Körper nicht mehr mitmacht. Die letzte Kontrolle die er hatte ist am bröckeln.

Diesmal greift er zum Handy und schreibt uns.

Es ist Ende März 2026. Er tippt: "Ich brauche eure Hilfe. Diesmal schaffe ich es nicht alleine."

Die Hilfe ist dringend nötig, da die bisherigen Rechnungen unbezahlt sind und Omar bereits angedroht wurde weitere dringend medizinisch nötige Behandlung zu verwehren.

We need €10,000 for our friend in Lebanon who is in dire straits:

Omar Sfeir from Lebanon had to undergo emergency thyroid surgery in February 2026 in Beirut. A few weeks later, his surgical wounds became infected with a multidrug-resistant bacterium, and he had to be hospitalized again.

Of the €10,000, €7,150 covers direct medical costs. The rest will hopefully cover two months of recovery—rent, electricity, food, time to find his first jobs, and a small buffer for the unexpected.

We are Stefanie and Lucia.

We met Omar independently of each other during stays abroad. Stefanie in 2016 through Erasmus in Greece and Lucia in 2019 in Beirut, where she was working.

We have found in him a wonderful friend who has accompanied us through the ups and downs of our lives, in some cases for a decade. Omar has enriched not only our lives, but the lives of many people. Through his work as a queer filmmaker and photographer, he gives a voice to the people in his country. Especially those who suffer from discrimination there (and here) and are already vulnerable.

Unlike in Europe, Lebanon does not have a public healthcare system.

Patients must cover the majority of the costs themselves. As a freelance, queer photographer and filmmaker, earning a living in Lebanon is already challenging. Especially now. For Omar, there is currently no way to get well and pay the bills at the same time.

What happens to the donations?

In Lebanon, it is not possible to collect money through this platform, which is why we are launching this campaign from Germany. The donations will initially be received by Stefanie Blank (Omar’s best friend) from Mönchengladbach directly from GoFundMe.

Afterward, the donations will be transferred outside of GoFundMe, but 100% of the funds will go to the bank account of Omar Sfeir’s sister, Youmna Sfeir. The account is with Audi Bank (Wise). This is a common method for receiving money in Lebanon, as there are hardly any fees involved. Fees of approximately 0.41–0.50% may apply only when converting euros to dollars, which amounts to about €41–€50 for €10,000.

We cannot change the situation in Lebanon. But we can help someone who gives others a voice to recover in good health and with peace of mind.

Imagine you’re young and have studied what you love.

You’re in your mid-20s, landing your first jobs as a filmmaker and photographer. You’re creative, full of joie de vivre, and people enjoy working with you.

Your life is vibrant. But your country has been frozen in time for decades.

Corruption and economic crisis. Your mother’s savings in the bank—gone overnight. In the fall of 2019, enough is enough. Hundreds of thousands take to the streets, together. You call it “Thawra,” the revolution. A photograph of yours goes viral, a symbol of hope for all those protesting.

Then it’s 2020: The pandemic brings the whole world to a standstill.

You and your country are no exception. In March, the Lebanese pound loses over 95% of its value. You find creative solutions. We’ll just have to get through this together.

In August, you’re driving home from work when there’s a massive explosion.

Suddenly, your car is on the other side of the street. You get out and administer first aid. Part of your beloved city lies in ruins, in the midst of a pandemic. Later, you dance with friends on a hill: We’re alive! How wonderful!

And amidst all the chaos, you keep making your art.

Films, photographs. About connection between people, about queerness, resilience, about humanity. You show what life in Lebanon is really like.

At 30, you get to show your work in Switzerland and Germany. Then war breaks out.

Back home, nothing is as it was before. People are exhausted, and so are you. Your friends leave the country if they can. Or they lose the will to live. You’ve been on edge for years. You’re all on edge. “Generation of Constant Crisis,” Arte calls your documentary.

One day, your camera and other valuables are violently stolen from you.

You’re treated in the hospital and are traumatized. But you fight your way out of it. Again.

Spring 2026. War again. Bombs again. Jobs canceled again.

A burning sensation in your throat. Your cortisol levels are through the roof. The doctors say it’s the stress. Your thyroid needs to be removed immediately. You don’t tell anyone about it. Your mother just lost her job. Health insurance covers 20%. As soon as you’re out, you start looking for the next way to make money.

A few weeks later, suddenly:

Fever, chills, sweating. You’re lying in bed and hear drones. Back in the hospital. A bacterial infection of the surgical wounds, likely a multidrug-resistant strain. The last bill is still unpaid.

Up to this point, Omar has always fought his way back up.

He’s always found a creative solution. He’s always kept going—for his art, for his community, for the people he gives a voice to. But now, for the first time, his body isn’t keeping up. The last bit of control he had is crumbling.

This time, he picks up his phone and texts us.

It’s late March 2026. He types: “I need your help. I can’t do this alone this time.”

Now it’s our turn.
