My name is Ian Persits and I am a 3rd-year medical student here in NYC. Over the last several weeks I have seen first-hand how my family, friends, and colleagues have been affected by the developing situation with the novel COVID-19 virus. The issue we are facing is that medical professionals are on the front-lines and are facing a shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Healthcare workers require this PPE to protect themselves, as well as the thousands of COVID-19 patients they will encounter in the coming months. Despite the chaos we have all seen around us, I believe our society as a whole has come together during this time of crisis to put the needs of our communities, and the nation as a whole, before our own. How can you do your part?

I don’t expect you to go out on the front-lines and risk your health personally; that is what we as medical professionals have devoted our lives to. Rather, I am hoping that through this period of stress, you can improve your own mental and physical health while making a difference. As the reality of sitting indoors has set in, many have been searching for ways to stay active and mentally sane from the confines of their own home. After speaking with my sister-in-law Alexandra Samet (@meditation4medicine) about the problems our healthcare system is facing, she has generously decided to hold free online yoga sessions for all who wish to partake. Sessions will last 1-hr long and be held several times throughout the week on Instagram live. Alex is an NYT 200-Hour Certified Yoga Instructor & IIN Certified Health Coach, with 4+ years of experience teaching public and private yoga classes that include Asana (Physical Postures), Meditation, Mindfulness, and Pranayama (Breathing Techniques). She has also lead wellness workshops on Ayurveda and Integrative Nutrition. Her tips have been featured in well-known wellness publications such as VeryWell, Men’s Fitness, and Extremely Good Parenting. Her sessions usually cost $40 per class and $140 per private session, but she has decided to do her part in the fight against COVID-19 to host these sessions for free and make them available to you in the comfort of your own home. Alex will use a combination of yoga and mindfulness practices to help you stay positive and physically engaged during these uncertain times.

Class schedules will be updated on a weekly basis so that you can make time for a session. We hope that you enjoy these sessions regularly and share them with your friends. If after the session you felt that it positively impacted you or someone you know, we encourage you to donate any dollar amount you see fit. 100% of the proceeds we receive will be donated to the purchase of PPE (gloves, masks, gowns etc.) for New York State/New York City hospital workers and medical professionals. We are in this together and we will overcome.

P.S. In the words of Bill Pullman from Independence Day “We're fighting for our right to live, to exist…[Today is the day] when the world declared in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our [COVID-19] Independence Day!

P.S.S He was talking about Aliens. I’m talking about beating a pandemic.

Pretty much the same thing?
