Eight years ago while working with adults with developmental disabilities I was left alone with an autistic client. The client became aggressive and began assaulting me for about 45 minutes before I was able to get to a phone to call for help. I had my hair ripped out, skin was scratched from my chest and arms, I was punched repeatedly, but ultimately I was struck with a wooden captain's chair in the face and right arm. Since that day I have been diagnosed with a condition called chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS).
The specialists that I see monthly are in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I live in Hudson, Wyoming, Therefore I have to travel at least 5 hours both ways for an appointment. From the beginning, Worker's Comp has fought me tooth and nail; in an effort to limit or minimize their obligations.
In November of 2017 I felt a burning sensation in my right foot similar to the pain in my hand. I asked my specialist about it and he confirmed that CRPS can and does migrate. Since the CRPS has spread to my leg Worker’s Comp has ceased paying for any of my medical care or medications.
During the course of my treatments, I have had several procedures on my spine to help manage my pain. One of which caused cardiac and respiratory arrest, limiting my options. During my most recent surgery, we discovered I am allergic to staples. The result was six week of antibiotics.
When we got home from Thanksgiving the ports in my back were oozing. This caused another trip to Cheyenne, where I was hospitalized. The infection I currently have is antibiotic resistant. The medicine that will treat this strain antibiotic resistant strain, without an allergic reaction is $600 a day for 6 weeks. If I do not start this treatment now, I will go into septic shock which could cause organ failure.
Worker’s Comp continues to not pay any of the medication and the family’s insurance is not paying because its Worker’s Comp’s obligation. We have a court hearing in August of next year for our Worker’s Comp case. Up to this point we have been financing our medical expenses but we have reached our maximum. We would be grateful for any assistance you can offer.
Thank you!
