Gary was diagnosed with melanoma cancer about 3 ½ years ago. He was to have surgery and at the time thought to have had it all removed. About 6 months ago, Gary got very sick, blurry vison and numbness in his arm. After a trip to the ER, and a couple full body scans, we found out that some of the cancer cells made it into his blood stream. The cancer had spread to his liver, lungs and brain, a rough total of around sixteen tumors. At this point the doctors were still hopeful about treating the cancer or at least slowing it down.
About a week before Gary was supposed to get his first round of chemotherapy, he become very ill. Gary was taken to the ER and quickly taken to Rochester General Hospital. The doctors at RGH, put Gary into a coma, which lasted about around three weeks. During this time, the tumors had grown at an alarming rate. After waking up from the coma, Gary lost the ability to move on his own, feed himself, or take on any of his daily tasks. The doctors were not hopeful that he would survive longer than a month.
Gary was placed in home hospice care; his wife had to quit her job, to provide twenty four hour care. Thankfully Gary has been able to hold on longer than the month that the doctors had predicted. With Gary and his wife being out of work, the medical bills adding up, along with the approaching funeral costs, any amount that could be donated to help cover the costs would be more than appreciated.
Gary is the type of man that would never ask for a hand out, or help with anything. But he has always been willing to lend a hand when asked. I know he would never ask for any of this but doing this will help to lessen the worry on his wife, my sister and myself.
