Medical care for 150 senior dogs

Donation protected
November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month, and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate, than to fundraise for a beautiful shelter I just visited in Colombia.

A few weeks ago, I traveled to the Fundación Animalove (Instagram @fundacion_animalove), a beautiful, peaceful safe haven for Bogotá’s street dogs, nested in stunning green mountains, outside of Zipaquirá. There, 320 dogs live in huge runs, organized in packs. Half of them are seniors.

Back in 2014, the Foundation learned that a local shelter was about to close due to lack of funding. With nowhere to go, 130 senior doggies were at risk of being euthanized. The Foundation didn’t hesitate, and made room for them. There are also lots of senior dogs in need in the streets of Bogotá and Zipaquirá, and the Foundation helps as many as they can.

Now, the Foundation is home to 150 senior doggies! There isn't a strong adoption culture in Colombia sadly, so for these senior doggies, the Foundation will most likely be their last home. The staff there is wonderful, loving and caring, and these dogs are happy. But they also need extensive vet care and constant monitoring.  For that reason, the Foundation recently hired a full-time vet.

With this fundraiser, I wanted to not only help the Foundation care for these senior doggies, but also help them buy equipment that will make a huge difference in their everyday operation. We have identified the following needs:

-       A hydraulic veterinary surgical table (about $1,300 with shipping). When I visited the Foundation, I was shocked to see that the vet only had a plastic folding table to operate on! Not only is this unsafe, but it’s also very uncomfortable for him and terrible for his back.

-       An oxygen tank (about $270) would also make a huge difference for the Foundation and their doggies. It would allow the vet to operate on the dogs directly, instead of having to drive them an hour away to Bogotá, paying another vet for surgeries (not to mention that many vets won’t operate on seniors).

-       A surgical kit for dissection and suture (about $50).

-       Food for the all the Foundation's doggies for a month ($3,000). Half of that ($1,500) is the cost of the special senior dog food.

I am rounding this up to $5,000, to cover currency fluctuation and help with GoFundMe/PayPal fees.

With your support, I hope and dream we can raise much more! Anything above that goal will be used to get more equipment, and buy more food for the months to come, so the people at the Foundation don’t have to constantly worry about how they are going to feed their dogs next month, and the one after...

Sam was rescued off the streets by the Foundation, and is now striving!

Much Love,
