The Backstory
On June 16, 2018, the day before Father's Day, our brother Ericsann aka "Eric / EJ" suffered from an ischemic stroke to the right side of his brain at the young age of 30.
The day started out like any other: playing basketball with friends, hanging out with his children in the living room, watching TV with his wife Joani, and taking a nap before working his night shift as a nurse at Guam Memorial Hospital. While in bed, Joani was fortunately by his side when she heard him constantly shuffling and recognized the signs of a stroke, as she is also a nurse. She immediately called 911 and he was brought to Guam Regional Medical City where their stroke team took care of him right away. They were able to remove the lengthy, 1-inch blood clot in his brain and kept him in the ICU for 5 days to monitor the bleeding and swelling. Thankfully, he is currently able to communicate and open his eyes and is aware of everything and everyone; however, he has minimal movement and sensations on his left side of the body. Each day he is showing gradual progress by exercising his left arm and leg, while we remain hopeful that he will regain full strength in time.
Who is Eric?
Born and raised on Guam in a Catholic Filipino family, he is the first born and only son of James and Cherry Cordova with his 3 sisters, Joanna, April, and Apple. He is the husband of Joan Marie aka "Joani" and the father of 3 beautiful girls: Samantha Lauren (age 7), Emma Catherine (age 5), and Sophia Marie (age 1). Since the age of 13, he was diagnosed with lupus (a chronic autoimmune disease rarely found in men) which has brought him in and out of the hospital over the years and, as we now learned, doubled his risk of having a stroke. Despite his medical history, he studied to become a registered nurse and is now working in the telemetry ward at Guam Memorial Hospital for the past 8 years. He maintained his health by working out at the gym every day and playing basketball with friends. Among his friends and coworkers, he is described as one of the kindest, sweetest, and most "smiley" person in the group. Though he is mostly serious or quiet at home, he manages to be silly and loves to joke around with his children and tease his sisters.
The Costs
The surgery plus each night stay in the hospital and the various tests conducted to check his health (i.e., angiogram, TEE, echocardiogram, CT scans, tPA medication) are adding up to a weighty amount. An updated breakdown of costs is listed below. This has yet to include the upcoming physical therapy sessions and other medical equipment and check-ups he would need in the coming months or years. As Guam, unfortunately, does not yet have the medical advances and opportunities for Eric's greater chance of a full recovery, there are plans to temporarily move him to Manila, Philippines for rehabilitation. Because Eric is clearly unable to work and Joani being by his side each step of the way to recovery, their financial situation greatly needs assistance.
Breakdown of Costs (as of June 23):
Room = $20,172.65
Emergency Dept. = $2,302.87
Procedure:
Surgery = $35,889.09
TEE = $2,261.48
CT = $3,219.85
ECG = $344.51
Professional Fee = $5,353.56
Physical Therapy = $898.08
Swallow Test = $887.03
Medications = $4,644.80
Labs = $4,105.29
TOTAL = $80,079.21
(before insurance)
How You Can Help
We are kindly and humbly asking for any monetary donations to help alleviate the medical bills from the hospital and upcoming rehabilitation. Though the insurance company may be a great help, the remaining balance will still be difficult to cover without work. Any amount is greatly appreciated and will go a long way for Eric and his family. Please share this link on your social media accounts as well to help spread the word.
We wholeheartedly thank you for your support through this difficult time for our brother/son/husband/father/friend.
