This is our mother Cheryl and we are raising money for her medical transportation from Washington state to Arizona. Her health has declined rapidly! Within the last 8 weeks, she had a pelvic MRI which revealed three masses, one of which was cancerous; she then had a full hysterectomy. Days later, her doctor determined she needed to undergo aggressive chemotherapy due to the likelihood she still had microscopic cancer cells in her blood. Shortly after, she had a port put in and the next day received her first chemo treatment. She was going to need 6 treatments, 3 weeks apart. After her first treatment, she was feeling okay but she immediately lost all of her hair. She always took pride in her hair and makeup so this was not pleasant for her. She was doing relatively well until June 7th when her friends found her alone at home, on the floor, unable to get up. At first, it appeared she may have had a stroke. It is believed to assume she had been on the floor and unable to help herself for roughly 48 hours. The ambulance took her to the hospital where they determined she had a severe UTI.
Her problems began to worsen quickly. She then developed a very bad blood infection all throughout her body. Even her port became infected and had to be surgically removed. She continued to have high fevers and neurological effects such as uncontrollable outbursts and movements. She then had to have two surgeries on her neck/spinal cord due to abscesses from the infection.
We flew to Washington late on the June 15th because they were not confident she was going to live. She has had significant improvement since my brother and I's arrival. Nurses said they felt our presence has had a big impact on her recovery. Luckily, she has since recovered fairly well but her life going forward has forever changed. The infection has gotten better, her oxygen levels are up and she is finally eating! After almost two weeks in the hospital, she may be discharged soon but she will go to a skilled nursing facility and then to a long term care home. Due to the pressure on her spinal cord, she has major, life changing effects. The doctors think she will never walk again. She will, most likely, be at a minimum a paraplegic but likely a quadriplegic. She only has movement in her head and neck at this time. This is a HUGE life change for our mother; she was incredibly independent and enjoyed gardening and taking care of herself. This will forever be changed.
Our mother lives in Washington but we would love to have her move to Arizona with me, her daughter. Not only will she benefit from being close to family, Arizona has outstanding medical care for people in her situation. She will have a lot of hurdles to tackle, including the possibility of still needing to beat cancer. The type of medical transportation she will need will be very expensive and the insurance will not cover it. We are desperate to get her to Arizona in August so that she can be near family as she fights to survive. Please consider donating as soon as possible, we'd love to have her close to family and continue back towards a great life. Thank you.
