Medical Training in Africa and Asia

This year I have the incredible privilege of completing an elective with Professor Judith Goh- an inspiring urogynaecologist.

Prof Goh spends 3 months every year training doctors in Asia and Africa in the treatment of obstetric fistula and vaginal prolapse- conditions caused by prolonged childbirth and extreme sexual violence. Her team treats women who often have emotional and social trauma caused by war, rape, domestic violence, poverty, shame and grief.

Obstetric fistulas are the result of long, obstructed labours. >90% of babies do not survive this labour. An obstetric fistula results in an abnormal connection between the vagina and the bladder and/or rectum. This means women will leak urine and/or faeces uncontrollably into the vagina.

Because these women live in villages with no access to medical facilities, their devastating injuries are not repaired. They then become ostracized from their families and communities because of their injuries & gender inequality, and suffer domestic violence.

It costs $215 to treat each woman with a prolapse, and $324 to treat each woman with a fistula. These are life-saving surgeries.

Covid permitting, I hope to travel to Uganda with Prof Goh at the end of the year. On these trips, the team typically does 40 prolapse surgeries and 70 fistula cases.

Please help Prof Goh's team change women's lives by donating here. Every bit counts
