Medical Support for Michael’s Spinal Cord Injury Recovery

Michael and Lindsay are two of the best people you can truly ever know. They are approaching their 5th year of marriage and have the sweetest little girl, Magnolia, who is about to turn 3 next month. They recently bought their first house in June 2025 and have been enjoying the new home as a family. To know Michael and Lindsay is to witness genuine kindness in action. Their generosity and selflessness have touched so many lives.

On August 2, 2025, during a family celebration Michael suffered a devastating spinal cord injury from a freak accident, paralyzing him instantly from his chest down. He was medevacked from Tidalhealth Peninsula Regional to Christiana Hospital for emergency surgery. His surgeon reported it looked as if someone took a hammer to his C5 vertebrae. He had an anterior/posterior spinal fusion from C4 to C7. He spent nineteen days in the surgical trauma ICU, enduring eleven days intubated on a ventilator until getting a tracheostomy. While in the ICU, there were many scares including pneumonia, constant desaturation of his oxygen and his heart stopping. However, once stabilized he was transferred on August 21st, 2025 to a spinal cord rehab called Jefferson-Moss Magee in Philadelphia, PA. They are one of the best in the country for spinal cord rehabs.

Spinal cord rehab is an intensive short term rehabilitation program consisting of a minimum of 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. This is 'bootcamp' for spinal cord injury patients, as the first 6-12 months are the most critical period after an injury for rehab. Currently, Michael is developing skills to improve his function and foster as much independence as possible as his nervous system heals. He is currently in a power wheelchair and using many adaptive devices to improve independence. The goal of spinal cord rehab is not only physical recovery but the emotional adjustment, and reintegration into daily life.

Upon discharge Michael will need to continue intensive therapy in an outpatient setting, the closest being about an hour from their house. His mobility presents a significant barrier to accessing treatment and attending appointments. Lindsay is preparing to sell their Toyota 4Runner as they will need to get a mobility van to transport Michael in his power wheelchair. Their goal is to acquire a modest, dependable used mobility van, with an estimated cost of $40,000, on top of the ongoing medical bills. This experience has been incredibly humbling, and a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change. Michael finds the strength to keep moving forward with faith in God, and the support of family, friends, his treatment team and many kind-hearted supporters. The road ahead is challenging, but his determination remains strong. Michael and Lindsay are overcome by the outpouring of love, support, and generosity they’ve received throughout this journey. If you feel called to contribute, any donation will go directly toward covering the ongoing medical expenses Michael continues to face as he works toward recovery.
