THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR DONATING! We have officially closed the fundraiser and will be handing out medical supplies to Mawenzi Hospital this week! If you want any updates on what the money has allowed us to donate feel free to text any of us! A lot of our donations will be going towards glucose test strips [as these are too expensive for the hospital to afford] and a syringe driver - both of these things will make a huge difference so thank you!
We are three Newcastle medical students on our elective in Moshi town, Tanzania. After spending some weeks in Mawenzi Hospital, we've decided to create this page as we've seen firsthand how much a change we can make by donating supplies. We are here for 10 weeks and will be working really hard within the hospital and in each department to ensure the funds go where they are needed the most. We have built a network of local staff -mostly the nurses in charge - who have showed us what supplies will make the most difference and will help us execute this in a sustainable way. What we are currently working towards are:
-hand wash -there is no handwash on any of the wards, only hand sanitiser. Having handwash will change the level of infection control and safety for the staff and patients.
-oxygen masks -there is a limited supply of these and we have seen patients in emergency situations who don't receive enough oxygen because of lack of oxygen masks.
-face masks -there are many infectious diseases present and only some wards have a supply of face masks.
-thermometers -the current thermometers are old and inaccurate and there are few available.
- glucose monitors
- monitoring machines
Mawenzi Hospital is a government hospital (as opposed to a Christian/private hospital) which means that the patients are generally poorer, lots relying on social government benefits for healthcare and not always able to afford private services-this is all they have. Supplies are also cheaper here so even a small donation will make a big difference (for example cannulas are 2p and people regularly can't afford them). Thank you so much for your help, it will truly make a difference.
