Most of you know 2022 has been absolutely devastating for our family, and this last month it has become multitudes worse.
Most of you know my Dad Thomas Mcclung as “BoBo”. For the last 8 years he has been fighting and ongoing battle with diabetic ulcers on his right foot. He has spent countless months in in full contact pressure casts with weekly cast changes, daily trips into the hyperbaric chamber and countless doctors visits. All while taking care of my mom and nanny and getting his blood sugar in to a perfect range and being diagnosed with Charcot foot in both feet.
Around approximately October 17th after being in the bed sick with what we thought was the flu out of nowhere his left foot began to swell become red and severely painful. At first glance he was told his ankle was broken so to the Charcot. During this time he also developed severe pain in his clavicle area , which was presumed to be from putting all his weight on the walker. With in a matter of 4 days he began to show signs of leakage and tissue decay on that foot.
On Thursday November 10th he was admitted to Mercy hospital to begin treatment for the infection in both feet. During this time we learned all of this infection was likely coming from the right foot that was being treated for the last 8 years. He was septic, and the pain in his clavicle is actually infection in the joint. The only solution is to amputate his left leg just below the knee. The surgery will take place on Monday November 14th. He will likely need subsequent surgeries to try and save the right foot as well as to remove the infection from his clavicle area.
The medical bills are already starting to pile up and will be significantly worse over the coming months. He will need therapy, rehabilitation, mobility equipment, a prosthetic and much more. On top of that neither my home here in Charlotte or their home in Virginia is handicapped accessible.
