I will be teaching at a University Hospital in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Africa for 2 weeks in April, and I would like to raise funds to bring much needed Medical Laboratory Supplies with me. I am not raising funds for my own travel.
Most people on FB know me as a Gypsy Horse breeder. In my other life, though, I am a Pathology Scientist. I was the founding CEO of my professions' certification body in Canada, and I have extensive experience with both teaching and performing my Pathologists' Assistant duties across Canada. These duties mainly include the gross dissection and description of surgical specimens. In other words, I cut up body parts removed from surgery and choose peices of these body parts to be processed to make slides with which a pathologist can make a diagnosis. It is imperative that the correct peices be chosen, and that the description of that body part is accurate. Without this, the pathologist may not be able to make a correct diagnosis, resulting in incorrect patient management, treatment, prognosis, etc.
I have recently been given the opportunity to teach how to dissect specifically breasts and colons (as well as other surgical specimens) to residents and technologists in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in Africa. Africa has a particularly high rate of breast cancer. Some breast cancers respond relatively well to specific drugs. But without proper handling of these specimens, it is unclear which patients would benefit from these drugs and which patients could potentially be harmed by them.
My time off of work and travel expenses are covered. I am not raising funds for my own travel. Rather, I am raising funds to bring supplies from Canada to Africa to give to the Pathology department in Abidjan. Supplies needed include: Gloves, blades, formalin neutralizing pads, dissection tools, lens papers, etc.
Thank you so much!! Once the GoFundMe has closed I will post the medical supplies I was able to purchase to bring with me.
