It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that my father, James Casallo, passed away on January 29, 2023 after a long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). My father is survived by my mother, Stella, me (Nicole), and my four siblings: Kimberly, Timothy (TJ), Gerard, and Henerico as well as 1 grandchild, Gavin. During his battle with ALS, my mother stayed by his bedside for almost 2 years. Within that time, her focus was ensuring that my father always had a loved one close by. Due to the progression of ALS, my father lost his ability to speak, eat, and breathe on his own. My mother was his main support during that time. She was unable to work and sacrificed her time to be my father’s caregiver and advocate. Caring for my father has taken an emotional and financial toll on my family.
