Hello everyone! My name is Meaghan Flanagan and I’ve set up this go fund me on behalf of my sister Maura Flanagan and brother in law Vartan Sahverdiyan. On Monday July 5th Vartan suffered from a medical emergency and was taken to UMASS. It was discovered he was in septic shock due to an E. Coli infection in his blood stream. His kidney and liver had begun to shut down and he was given blood pressers to get his blood pressure back up. Had he not made it to the ER when he had, doctors said he would not have survived.
Unfortunately things took an even worse turn. Vartan began losing blood flow in his fingers and feet, causing extreme and intense pain. For many days the cause was a mystery. On June 14, doctors finally determined he is suffering from symmetrical peripheral gangrene, a condition caused by septic shock. This is an extremely rare condition, with no clear treatment protocol or surgical intervention. Doctors are giving him the best treatment they can, utilizing pain medication and a medication to increase blood flow. They are not sure if all of his extremities will reperfuse. His left index finger is completely black and will have to be removed.
Vartan has been in the hospital for nearly two weeks now with no discharge date in sight. When he is finally discharged, he will require extensive care, either at a rehab facility or with an in home nurse. Family and friends know Maura and Vartan as generous, caring friends. But like many of us, they live paycheck to paycheck and faced difficulties during the pandemic. Vartan works in sales and styling at Nordstrom, while Maura manages grants at a nonprofit that helps women and families move out of poverty. They have an adorable 2 year old named Ronan who is the center of their world.
