Medical Fund for Sergey “Nich” Tolmachev
Donation protected
Sergey "Nich" Tolmachev (63) is a true craftsman; Nich has done beautiful tile work for our customers for over 20 years.
On Monday, October 26th, 2020, Nich was installing tile on a bathroom floor when he became dizzy, disoriented, and confused. The homeowners where he was working knew that something was wrong, but Nich could not express what was going on and had a difficult time responding to questions. Afraid that he was having a heart attack, the homeowners called 911.
The next day (Tuesday), it was discovered that Nich had not had a heart attack but that he was experiencing a devastating aortic dissection. He was immediately transported from Denver Health to University Hospital by helicopter for emergency surgery to repair the damage to his aorta.
His first surgery was scheduled to last almost 12 hours but was cut short because his blood pressure rose to dangerous levels. Nich was taken to the ICU in a medically induced coma with his chest not completely closed in anticipation of a second surgery to finish what was started during the first operation.
On Thursday, doctors performed the second surgery to finish repairing his aorta but Nich suffered a stroke during the operation. The doctors informed his family that they had done everything possible for him and now they have to wait and see how his body responds.
On Friday night, the doctors performed a CT scan to assess the damage caused by the stroke and discovered that he had a subsequent stroke. It is not yet known how severe the damage is but the medical bills are piling up from the helicopter, operations, tests and ICU. Because Nich works for himself, he does not have health insurance and his family will be left to bear the cost of his care as he will likely never be able to work again like he did before.
Our goal is to raise $100,000.00 to help Nich and has family pay for their mounting medical costs during this devastating time.
11/6/2020 Update: Scans have shown that one of the strokes was major. Nich is currently unable to move his right side, his legs and he is unable to speak. He can respond by squeezing with his left hand.
