On a recent trip to Belgrade, my mother met a young woman- another patient - at her physiotherapist's office. After seeing her on several visits, the two got to talking and my mom learned of Jelena’s story...
Seven years ago, at 15 years old, Jelena suffered a serious handball injury to her right arm. What initially seemed like a broken arm turned out to be extreme damage to the radial nerve. Despite having several surgical procedures, and years of therapy, Jelena still has minimal movement in her arm. Worse still, her arm does not receive proper blood flow or lymphatic drainage and is not only visibly larger than her left, but poses a critical threat to her life if not consistently treated. Jelena regularly travels over 2 hours (one way) from her small town of Loznica to Belgrade for treatment, which costs upwards of $100 per visit.
Jelena and her two siblings were raised by their grandmother in a small village close to Loznica. Her grandmother passed away a few years ago, when Jelena was 18, leaving the three of them to take care of themselves and their modest home on their own. Despite these unfortunate circumstances and her chronic pain and mobility challenges, Jelena remains a positive and uplifting young woman, full of support and encouragement for her siblings and with the hope for a better future. Even without the use of her right hand (her writing hand) she completed college to be a medical assistant, and her positive attitude and perseverance are truly inspiring.
My mother was extremely touched by Jelena's story and took it upon herself to research what can be done to help. While there, she gifted Jelena with a specialized electrode massager and the young woman was not only extremely grateful but saw immediate improvement in her pain management. If a small act of kindness by one person can do so much, just imagine what we can all do together! I truly believe that together we can help change this deserving young woman’s life.

After speaking to several doctors and specialists, my mother was assured that - short of risky and extremely expensive nerve surgery - this machine is Jelena's best chance for a healthy, "normal" life. With daily use this machine will vastly improve the quality of her life by promoting proper blood flow and lymphatic drainage, resulting in less pain, less swelling, and improved mobility in her arm. Jelena now works at a call centre to help pay for her medical expenses, but can only afford a handful of treatments a month. With this machine, Jelena will be able to receive treatment in her own home which will relieve her of expensive and lengthy travel to Belgrade. Not only will this machine save her 4 hours of travel time, but will allow her to have daily physiotherapy which will significantly improve her chances of success and her quality of life. Already remarkably self-sufficient, with improved use of her right arm, Jelena will finally have a chance to work in her field, to continue supporting herself and her siblings, and most importantly to live pain-free for the first time since her accident - it will literally be life-changing!
