At their 20-week anatomy scan, Allison and Micah Kauffman of Watertown, SD found out that their baby girl has a rare and severe brain disorder that will be terminal. After further scans and testing, their baby girl was diagnosed with Semilobar Holoprosencephaly and they are told that her life expectancy is less than one year. Holoprosencephaly is a disorder caused by the failure of the brain to sufficiently divide into double lobes of the cerebral hemispheres. The result is deformed brain structure and severe skull and facial defects, such as cleft lip/palate, seizures, missing front teeth, closely set eyes, small head, multiple hormone deficiencies, feeding difficulties, developmental delays and more. The Kauffman’s have named their sweet baby girl Sunny Marie and plan to faithfully continue with the pregnancy and provide around the clock care for Sunny until she goes to her heavenly home. Allison and Micah were high school besties who reunited after college and married in the summer of 2022. They moved up their wedding because they felt a strong calling to start a family. As you can imagine, Sunny’s terminal prognosis has absolutely devastated their family. Due to the complexity of the pregnancy and expected complications at birth, Allison is being monitored closely by specialists in Sioux Falls, SD requiring her to take frequent 200-mile round trips for check-ups. Allison is a self-employed photographer who recently remodeled and moved into a new studio. She is hoping to continue working this summer and then temporarily close in August in anticipation of Sunny’s arrival and intensive medical needs. If God allows them to take Sunny home, Allison and Micah will provide around the clock care for Sunny until she passes. It is certain that Sunny will need very specialized care.
