Medical Expenses for Stage 4 Cancer Diagnosis

Hi. This fundraiser is for Jennifer Bull. She is a direct care staff who works with individuals with Developmental Disabilities. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 Liver cancer on February 14, 2022. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance because she was in excruciating pain. She thought it was due to a back problem and that she needed surgery. The doctors realized that she had Stage 4 Liver cancer that had metastasized to her pelvic/ hip bones. SInce then, it has been an emotional roller coaster. Her insurance would not pay for her to stay in the hospital and discharged her. She lives alone and has been in and out of the hospital since then. Currently, she is in rehab as she cannot take care of herself without assistance. The insurance has stopped paying. She has already paid $16,120 out of pocket to be there for just one month. She has not started chemotherapy or treatment since her diagnosis. She had a port put in for chemotherapy, but the insurance has still not approved the treatment yet. This is two and a half months since her diagnosis!

Jennifer is a warm, wonderful human being who is not getting what she needs due to our flawed healthcare and insurance system. Direct care staff make low wages, and Jennifer worked multiple jobs just to make ends meet. Even that was never enough. She would work all day at day programs and then work as a community habilitation worker in the evenings. She also would pick up extra hours in the group homes, and would dog sit as well. She worked endlessly, only to now be spending her days in rehab and paying out of pocket. The next step for her is hospice if treatment does not start soon.

Jennifer is in extreme pain at all times. She can no longer walk, or use one of her arms. She is such a kind, compassionate woman who her individuals adore. Parents always felt secure in her taking care of their disabled children. Jennifer does not deserve this after a life of never asking for handouts and working all day and evening.
