Medical Expenses for Nicki Hermance

My brother Matt, and his family’s lives were forever changed on Monday, October 16th. His wife Nicki suffered a devastating fall down the basement stairs at home, causing severe brain injury.

The fall caused significant bleeding and swelling in the brain. She had emergency surgery, (craniotomy) removing a part of her skull to relieve the pressure and control bleeding. Nicki is currently being treated in the Neuro ICU in a medically sedated state to allow the brain pressure to decrease.

Matt and his family will be faced with numerous medical bills and other expenses as a result of this accident. Our goal with this Go Fund Me campaign is to allow for those who would like to help Matt and his family an avenue to do so. Any amount you are able to donate will be greatly appreciated. It will help relieve some of the financial burden, allowing the family to focus more on Nicki’s care.

For those of you who don’t know Matt and Nicki personally, they live in Hudsonville, Michigan with their children, 18 year old daughter, Lauren and 13 year old son, Sam. They both work as nurses at local hospitals. Now Nicki finds herself in need of the compassionate care she so selflessly gave to others.

In addition to the brain trauma, Nicki sustained numerous facial fractures and a C6 vertebrae fracture. The pressure in her brain is not allowing blood and oxygen to get to certain parts of her brain, causing necrosis (the tissue to die).

After the medical team met with Matt, Lauren, Nicki’s brother Greg and her mom Marilyn, the tentative care plan is as follows: On Monday, October 23rd, the doctors will attempt to wake her up from the sort of medically induced coma she’s in and fully assess her neurologically. Depending on the outcome/results, the family will decide on the medical path forward.

Even if Nicki comes out of this, she will likely never be quite the same person after this accident. Per Matt, she could potentially have language issues, both with comprehension and speaking, learning disabilities, and even some paralyzation in her body because of the tissue necrosis.
