We have been getting alot of people reaching out with questions regarding the accident and whether or not a GoFundMe account or some kind of fundraising was created. Now that things have kind of settled down and everyone can kind of breathe, we felt it was time to let everyone know what was going on.
On Saturday, July 27, our family received a phone call that no family wants to hear. Nichol and Dustin had decided to go out on the motorcycle to grab a quick bite to eat and what should have just been a nice bike ride out, ended in an accident that could have easily claimed both their lives. We are so very thankful and blessed that they are both still here with us and that their 7 year old son Cole still has both of his parents here with him today. While on the motorcycle, for unknown reasons still at this time, the bike veered off to the side of the road causing them to strike a bridge railing head on and ejecting them both from the bike. Due to the extent of the injuries, both Nichol and Dustin were transported to the University Medical Center in New Orleans Trauma Department to immediately get their conditions stable. After lots of exams, scans, x-rays, tests, etc., we slowly began receiving some answers as to both of their conditions. Dustin was discharged later that afternoon with excessive road rash, blunt force trauma, bruising, and a foot injury, which during all that time, his main concern was Nichol’s condition, he was not thinking about himself. Nichol on the other hand suffered major injuries, which resulted in surgeries, hospitalization, and a long road to recovery. When Nichol was ejected from the bike, she flew several feet, which resulted in her landing on her knees and a blunt force impact of her head and shoulder hitting the concrete. Her injuries consisted of excessive road rash, blunt force trauma, broken Orbital Bone around her eye, multiple face fractures, a shattered Patella (knee cap) on her left leg, and a broken Humerus (long bone in upper arm connecting elbow to shoulder) in her right arm.
Sunday, July 28, Nichol underwent surgery to repair the broken Patella, which required placing pins and wires to reconstruct her left knee. At that time, she could not walk or bend her leg and would require extensive time to heal through rehabilitation.
Tuesday, July 30, Nichol underwent another surgery, this one to repair the broken Humerus, which required placing plates and pins in her right arm, which she currently cannot use and will require extensive time to heal through rehabilitation as well.
Wednesday, July 31, Nichol started running a high fever, so they ran a few tests to try and determine what was causing it. The blood work came back fine but days following we began to smell a very foul odor coming from her knee. The night of August 3, a doctor was called in and removed the brace and bandages from her leg to examine where they operated and discovered that there was a serious infection present and informed her that it would require another surgery.
Sunday, August 4, Nichol underwent surgery for them to go in and remove the infection but once they opened the knee up, they decided that they would remove all the pins and wires and not close up the knee due to the extent of the infection and the fact that all the pins and wires were moving. A wound vacuum pack had to be placed on the open wound to drain all the infection out at that point.
Tuesday, August 6, Nichol underwent another surgery, where they went in and repaired the knee, but at that time there was still fluid present, so they were not able to close it up and it still required a wound vacuum pack.
Thursday, August 8, Nichol underwent her 5th surgery where they went in and had to pull skin from her leg to close up the knee. A wound vacuum pack was placed again and they will recheck everything on Tuesday, August 13.
As of today, August 10, Nichol is still at University in New Orleans and awaits the day where she will get discharged, which at that time she will then be transported to an In-Patient Rehabilitation facility where she will require around the clock assistance and begin her healing journey. She will be away from home and out of work for quite some time, but we are praying that all surgeries were successful and she will make a full recovery. It has been hard on this family being separated from each other and going through all this, but Nichol has endured the worst of this situation. Being laid up with her condition has not been easy on her mentally and physically, and on top of that, missing out on time with her son, his first day of school, etc. has really taken a toll on her. Those who know Nichol know that Cole is her whole world and she is his, so please keep both of them in your prayers to remain strong throughout this time. Nichol has a long road ahead of her, but she is very strong and we expect her to take this journey on and run with it!
We are creating this GoFundMe to raise funds to help with all medical costs that have occurred and will continue to occur once she begins her Rehabilitation journey. We also ask everyone to please keep this family in their prayers as they go through this rough time. Not many people were aware, but just a couple of months ago, this family also encountered another event, which could have possibly claimed their lives. While asleep, their kitchen caught fire and thankfully they were able to escape and resulted with just a kitchen that was completely destroyed. This family has been through so much, overcame an obstacle thrown at them, and will overcome this as well. Thank you for taking the time to read their story and they appreciate any and all help, as well as prayers! We will do our best to make updates here, while continuing to keep the immediate family updated and getting through everyday life.
Thanks
