Jonathan (who is 46 with no previous health problems) had what he assumed was a stomach virus the week of October 10th. His wife, Kaylee, found Jonathan unresponsive the morning of October 14th and rushed him to the ER at CHI Memorial Fort O. He was incoherent, unable to speak, and had fallen down their steps. The hospital did a brain scan, chest scan, and abdomen scan along with a lot of bloodwork. His liver was enlarged and his kidneys were in distress. He was transferred to CHI Memorial Downtown by ambulance where he was immediately admitted and they began testing for autoimmune diseases, viruses, etc. His kidney function is currently at 4% and he has Acute Tubular Necrosis. The doctors are unsure what has caused Jonathan’s kidney issues, but he is in renal failure. He has had two days of dialysis treatments back to back, a day of "diuretics challenge," and is now in dialysis for his third treatment. The doctors are still unclear as to what has caused his kidneys to shut down, but he is in renal failure. The doctor said depending on his bloodwork results, they will do a renal biopsy, and dialysis will be continued with hope that his kidneys respond to treatment and begin to work on their own. There is no promise that the kidneys will start working again, but we do have hope that they will in time. Jonathan has also developed a blood clot in his arm, and the doctors are working diligently to ensure that does not affect his treatment.
We’ve created this fund to help with Jonathan’s medical bills, and to help his family financially since he and Kaylee are unable to work at this time. Jonathan is a wonderful father and husband; he works two jobs to provide for his family. Anyone who knows Jonathan knows his witty banter and infectious smile- we want to see that Jonathan again. Jonathan, Kaylee, and the kids are so loved, and we would like to help support them during this unexpected medical emergency.
If you are able, and would like to donate, you can do so here or to Kaylee’s Venmo at @kayleeshields47.
Please keep Jonathan, Kaylee, Eli and Olivia in your prayers as they go through this very difficult time. And pray for the doctors that they will be able to find answers needed to get Jonathan on the road to recovery.
