In May of 2019, Heidi was forced to wear a orthopedic boot due to Charcot arthropathy, a very serious diabetic issue. Due to said boot, and the overwhelming pandemic, she was forced to quit working. About a year later, in August of 2020, Heidi went in for a blister on the bottom of her foot and the doctor suggested a minor surgical procedure. During this procedure, a greater underlying issue was found: An infection that spread deep through her leg. Heidi was given an ultimatum; conjure up a lot of money for expensive medications and surgeries that might not work to save the leg or amputate from the knee down. The doctor recommended amputation, and after a lot of thinking and discussing with her husband Karl, Heidi took the suggestion and on August 28th Heidi was put to sleep to wake up with missing her leg from the knee down.
Due to COVID-19 and the cost of health insurance, Heidi has been unable to afford health insurance since July 2020. In the Williston and greater North Dakota area, Heidi has always been the first to volunteer for situations when others were in need. She has used her own time and effort, and sometimes even money, in order to help put together and host benefits that provided nothing to her. She is a valiant supporter and fundraiser for “BRAS for A CAUSE” in Williston, ND.
Because Heidi's home is not wheelchair accessible, she has to stay at her moms until they can figure out a new living situation.
Heidi has a long way to go before with occupational and physical therapy before she can fully help the community again. On top of the cost of all the previous medical bills, she will eventually have to purchase a prosthetic leg. She needs help now more than ever, and any amount of donation would be appreciated. I’m asking everyone to help me help Heidi get back to a new life she will be facing.
