Medical Expenses for Cindy Helsel

Hi everyone, this is Christina Helsel, Cindy Helsel’s daughter, bestie, and all around side kick.

4 years ago my mom was diagnosed with stage 2 endometrial cancer and it has been a battle ever since. She has gone through external beam radiation, a full hysterectomy, brachytherapy (internal radiation), chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and now just a couple months ago a full pelvic exenteration, resulting in a permanent urostomy and colostomy. She has also gone through treatment and consultations at UofM, Trinity, Mary Free Bed, and Mayo Clinic.

Mom is now learning how to walk again,

how to manage life with her ostomies Penelope and Coletta (yes, they have names!), and trying to get through PT while battling pressure wounds on her heels and a very painful blood clot in her leg that was discovered last week.

Throughout all of this the medical debt and on-going expenses has continued to grow to a point where it is now hovering around the $30,000 mark. My aunt and I have been doing what we can to provide financial support for bills and equipment, but the mountain just seems to get bigger not smaller.

So, while I have struggled to initiate this request, I am now asking for support for mom’s medical expenses. I’m trying not to feel awkward or let my pride get in the way, because I know that this debt is adding a significant amount of stress to mom’s life that she doesn’t need. I am also coming to the realization that I can’t be a full time caretaker and financier, as much as I want to be.
