On May 8th my mother, Beverly Martin and step father, Lawrence Michael Thompson were involved in a near fatal motorcycle accident. It was a beautiful sunny Saturday when they were on their way to their favorite pizza spot when a 75 year old woman, Dora Irby Brumfield who was driving a Jeep SUV failed to yield and turned straight in to their motorcycle then hit another car. Lawrence Michael Thompson was driving and was thrown in to the woman’s Jeep, out of the jeep through the windshield and on to her car, then on to the next car Dora hit, and back on top of Dora’s Jeep SUV. My mother, Beverly Martin was thrown 20 feet in to the air over cars and came back down landing in the middle of the road. They have both suffered tremendously. Lawrence Michael Thompson was torn down the middle resulting in complete reconstruction from his belly button down. He also suffered a broken pelvis which Baptist Orthopedist said was the worst pelvic injury he had ever seen in his career; as well as a broken back, reconstructed bladder and intestines, loss of movement and severe nerve damage in legs, torn leg muscles, severe chest laceration, and torn lip. The list could continue. My mother suffered a broken pelvis, bladder reconstruction, lacerations all over, broken foot, broken sternum, nerve damage to legs, and broken ribs. I had to witness my family go through absolute torture and heartache. It is a miracle they are still here but they have a very long road ahead of them for recovery. They both underwent many surgeries and have much to face including another surgery to remove their hardware. On May 22, they were married in their hospital room instead of a beautiful venue in Clemmons which we had prepared so long for. Beverly was in the hospital for near a month while Michael was in the hospital for a month then transferred to skilled care. They are now finally home together just this week.
The woman who struck them only had liability insurance which will not even touch a few days stay in the hospital. They have had to reconstruct their entire house to have a handicap accessible home including hospital beds, ramps through out, andhandicap accessible bathrooms. The cost of hospital bills will be insurmountable and reconstruction is a small fortune as well.
They are both amazing people who always give and help others. My mother, Beverly has been a nurse at Wake Forest Baptist Health going on 35 years and has spent her life caring for others. Lawrence Michael Thompson owns a Barber and Welding School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and has helped his student’s, employees, and countless others get jobs, financial help, and has helped them succeed in their careers. If there is one thing I am sure of it is that God was watching over them on May 8 and I believe it is because they are two beautiful people inside and out who deserve to live a long life together.
We would appreciate any donations to help cover their medical bills and/or handicap accessible home. Thank you so much and may God bless you all!
