Hello everyone! My mom (Ana) got diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's (ALS) in 2018. For those who are not familiar with the illness, it is a progressive neurodegenerative and autoimmune disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain resulting in loss of motor function and there is no cure. She then got COVID in April 2021 which substantially aggravated her ALS. She has lost the ability to speak, chew and swallow in addition to weakened hand and lung function. Due to her compromised tongue and throat muscles, she has lost around 60lbs in the last 6 months for not eating adequately. She was hospitalized for 2 weeks and had a procedure to get a PEG tube in the stomach for feeding. She is currently at home being taken care of by her family 24/7 with a portable ventilator to help her breathe. She is in a very delicate condition and the medical expenses are very overwhelming.
