Medical Expenses and support for Pastor, Author, and Missionaries: STEVE and LAURA SMITH

HISTORY

Steve and Laura Smith have dedicated their entire lives to trying to finish God’s Great Commission in our generation. After serving the Lord 30+ years full time as a pastor, church-planter, foreign missionary, and Christian Book author, Steve was diagnosed in October,2017 with a rare form of cancer (which is more common in Asia) called cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile duct). There are no known cures for this cancer.

In their first 10 years, they planted a church in Los Angeles. Steve had to work a full-time secular job for support for many years. They then moved to a country in East Asia targeting an unreached people group of 1.4 million people who had no access to the gospel. Steve spent several years trekking in remote mountains and eating the food set before him in rustic villages (probably where he picked up his cancer parasite eating uncooked food). Suddenly an Acts-like movement of God broke loose, and about 200 village churches were started with about 4,000 new disciples of Jesus.

 The Smiths coached teams across Asia how to see “church planting movements” (CPMs) start by the power of the Spirit. Steve collaborated with missionaries from many organizations around the world. This led him to write the international best-seller T4T: A Discipleship Re-Revolution, which continues to be a guide for movements of God. God enabled Steve to become one of the world’s leading experts on CPMs. Steve also wrote two more books (novels) to rally the global body of Christ to finish the Great Commission (No Place Left: Hastening; No Place Left: Rebirth) and has 2 more on his heart to write if he is able to do so.

 In 2017 Steve recognized that many missionaries around the world were becoming well-versed in tools needed for evangelism and church planting, but were missing the spiritual dynamic needed for Acts-like movements. Steve wrote the book Spirit Walk to help missionaries, pastors and ordinary Christians learn to walk in the power of the Spirit as seen in the book of Acts. Steve’s diagnosis of cancer came One Week after he Steve finished this book. Also in 2017, Steve (and his close colleague Stan Parks) organized a new global movement called “24:14” based on the verse in Matthew 24:14. The goal was to finish reaching all of the unreached people groups and places in the world by year 2025 with the Gospel. Steve’s diagnosis of cancer came about two months after forming this new coalition. Do you see a pattern of attacks? The enemy definitely does not want the Steve to continue the work God has given him!

The NEED

Steve has undergone many treatments and procedures to control the cancer. These have sapped much of his ability to fulfill his organizational obligations and leadership of 24:14. Steve’s great aspiration is to finish the Great Commission and perhaps be the generation that sees the return of Christ (Matt. 24:14).

Medical doctors are not giving a clear prognosis as Steve has already passed the life expectancy of this cancer. Steve could continue on for 1-2 more years, perhaps longer.

We are calling for co-laborers to pray for a miraculous, complete healing and contribute funds to cover medical expenses that are not covered by their current medical insurance, many incidental costs, costs of complementary medical treatments, and general expenses support.

The GOAL

 $190,000 is the goal to cover the current and next two years of additional medical expenses and support for the Smiths.
