In September, Bill underwent emergency surgery and was hospitalized for a week. Incidentally, but thankfully, during the diagnosis and treatment of his abdominal hernias, the doctors also found a mass on his kidney. They determined that it is renal cancer and Bill will have to have his kidney removed when he heals from the initial surgery and the complications that he suffered from it. As you can imagine, two hospitalizations, a pending operation and additional hospitalization has accumulated a large amount of medical bills with more to come.
Bill, who was born and raised in the Skyview plan of West Mifflin, has spent his life dedicated to this community. Many young men in the community will remember him as their football coach, and many young ladies will remember him as their softball coach. He spent many years coaching those teams and serving as a board member of those organizations long after his children were too old to keep playing. He joined Skyview Volunteer Fire Company as a second generation firefighter over 45 years ago and has remained an active member for most of those years. He has spent a majority of those years serving as both an executive and line officer and is currently the President and Assistant Chief. Multiple times, he was honored with the “Most Active Firefighter” Award, most recently in 2017, at age 58. He has been there for members of this community on the fire scene during some of their worst days, but also to support them during some of their best. Bill is a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, friend, employee and firefighter. Anyone who truly knows Bill knows that if he can help you, he will. It is now our turn to help him, by allowing him time to simply heal and not worry about hurrying back to work to pay his medical bills. Because of social distancing and COVID concerns, we are not comfortable holding a traditional fundraiser at this time, so this is our way to show Bill that we are here for him. Any donation, as little as a dollar, is appreciated and we thank you for your continued prayers and support
