Friends and family of Carmel O’Keefe are supporting her through a very serious illness. In January, Carmel was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and further testing showed she suffers from Diabetic Macular Degeneration, a condition, which left untreated may cause Carmel to lose her eyesight. The treatment for this condition is a monthly injection at a cost of $2500. Carmel works as a home care worker but she doesn’t have any type of health plan. Brian is currently unemployed and has a serious heart condition and he has to pay over $1000 per month for his medication. Additionally Carmel’s diabetes remains uncontrolled and she may have to purchase an insulin pump. Carmel has applied for a subsidy but as of yet has not received any funding. We are setting up this Go Fund Me to pay for the injections while she awaits a decision on any funding that may be available to her. These injections are administered by Dr. Pike in St. John’s and must be paid for on the day they are given.

Carmel is a dedicated volunteer in her community and supports every charitable event, big and small and is always ready to lend a hand for any occasion. We are asking for support for Carmel now in this extremely important time when a punctual treatment schedule is necessary to save her eyesight.
