Medical costs for Ruby Castañeda
Donation protected
I have recently heard from Ruby Castañeda. She is in need of financial help. Her Family needs $4,300 for medical costs. And I am looking for suggestions and help. The need is time sensitive so planning a fund raiser at this time seems impractical to me.
I am open to any suggestions. I will keep you all informed of developments. Thank you for your time.
Ruby is one of the organizers with Marisol Chapina of Raid Relief to Reunite Families which was set up in response to the ICE raid on employees of Granite Precast. Ruby also played a role in the Health Protection for Immigrant Families Task Force, Public Health Advisory Board meetings regarding a proposal to support the undocumented. She spoke at city council meetings in support of the City of Bellingham Immigration Advisory Board.
I include portions of her email below for details.
Besides all of the immigration process and all of the stress that alone brings, I have had some health issues since coming to México. On Monday I was informed that I need to have a hysterectomy as soon as possible due to high risk pre-cancerous cells found on my cervix and uterus. Because of my past medical history which includes thyroid cancer, the chance of the pre-cancerous cells turning into cancer is 100% within the next 5 years. Since I am not a Mexican citizen, my children and I do not count on health insurance here, meaning every medical expense is paid out of pocket and on the spot. A hysterectomy here is approximately 50,000 pesos which equals to about $2,300 USD.
Unfortunately, I am not the only one needing surgery. Since being here in México Angelina has had several nose bleeds and headaches. At first we thought it was because of the climate change and heat but we decided to take her in to be seen by a doctor and they found a polyp in one of her nostrils which is causing severe obstruction for airway. That polyp is causing sinus and sleep issues. After a 3 moth treatment with medication and nasal spray, her doctor found the polyp growing in size and believes that the best thing to do is to remove the polyp by surgery. That surgery was quoted at 40,000 pesos which is roughly about $1,900 USD.
