On Wednesday, February 10, 2021, my mom, Sharla Spradley, was in a severe car accident on her way to work at McKinney North High School. After hitting a patch of ice on the highway, her car spun into the concrete barrier and was then sideswiped by a semi-trailer truck. She suffered a head laceration, multiple broken bones, a intracerebral hemorrhage, and remained in a comatose state for several weeks following the accident. After 19 days in the ICU, she was discharged to an acute care facility and has spent the past few months being treated for and recovering from her traumatic injuries.
Due to the physical and cognitive deficits she has suffered, Sharla will be unable to return to work and has been forced to step away from her career as a counselor. We have applied for Disability Retirement through TRS; unfortunately, the cost of her medical care is extensive and will not be fully covered by the monthly annuity from TRS. She will be discharged from rehab in mid-July, at which time she will still require 24/7 medical care, including tracheostomy care. Although the goal is for her to continue her recovery in the comfort of home as opposed to a nursing facility, this may not be financially feasible.
If you are lucky enough to know my mom, you know how thoughtful, loving, and selfless she is and how she has always given her all to her family, friends, coworkers, and students. We have been heartbroken by her accident, yet hopeful by her determination to recover.
We have set a goal of $50,000, but her long term needs will far exceed this amount. Thank you for your continued love and support for my mom during this time.
