A Family Holiday Turned Into a Living Nightmare – Please Help Us Bring Alan Home
What was meant to be a joyful family holiday to celebrate a 50th, 40th, and 35th birthday — a trip we had looked forward to for over a year — has turned into our worst nightmare.
Just three days into our trip to Zante, our beloved Alan began feeling unwell. What was thought to be simple muscular pain escalated quickly. He was taken to a local Greek clinic, and from there, was sent all over the island for tests. At one hospital, we were stunned when a doctor bluntly said:
“Antibiotics won’t cure cancer.”
We were heartbroken, confused, and terrified. No explanation. No clarity. Just shock.
Alan’s partner – our mum – was left alone for five hours in a dark, broken waiting room, with no information and no reassurance. She genuinely thought she might never see him again.
From that moment, everything unravelled.
Alan’s condition worsened. He struggled to breathe, needed oxygen therapy and constant care. He was transferred between hospitals with little or no communication. At times, we were given updates about the wrong patient. There were no phones to call, no translators, no consistent care.
Eventually, he was moved to ICU in Athens, where things should have improved — but didn’t.
Our travel insurance company initially approved his care and transfer, only to pull out weeks later, citing an “underlying condition” they failed to check before approving his admission to a private hospital. A condition that was stable and had no active treatment. Now, they’re refusing to pay. We are pursuing legal action, but right now, time is against us.
We’ve exhausted every option. The British Embassy can’t help. He can’t travel on a normal flight – he needs an air ambulance to get home to ICU care in Yeovil.
Alan is now back in a general hospital in Athens. Conditions are dire. Patients must provide their own food, water, even toilet paper. There are no call buttons, no care staff, and no dignity.
His oxygen levels dropped to 36%, and he was left unattended until family members found him. We’ve taken turns sleeping on hospital floors, just to make sure he survives the night.
Alan is still fighting. He’s on 60% oxygen, still battling infection, still asking for us to be by his side. He’s told staff to pass a message to his family:
“Please tell them I need them. I’m really losing the power to continue.”
This is emotionally destroying us. And now, we’re asking for your kindness and generosity. We need to raise funds to bring Alan home – safely – by air ambulance. A month has passed and we’re running out of hope.
Please, if you can, donate, share, and help us bring our wonderful Alan home where he belongs. Every penny counts.
With love and gratitude,
Our devastated but determined family ❤️
