Medical bills for Ahmed

Donation protected
At just after 8:00 on the morning of 9 October 2019, a car making a left turn hit Ahmed as he was crossing the street on his way home from his third shift job. It appears that the driver did not slow down, and the force of the impact broke Ahmad’s right elbow and snapped his right ankle, resulting in an open fracture.

Ahmed was taken to surgery at St. Mary's, where the surgeon worked for five hours repairing the damage to the ankle , as well as repairing the elbow.

The staff of St, Mary’s took good care of Ahmed while he recovered from the surgeries for two days. Saturday morning, 12 October, Ahmed was moved to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital for intensive physical and occupational therapy. When he began showing signs of a mild concussion, speech therapy was added to his schedule to help him with memory, executive functioning, and processing information. His good attitude and hard work resulted in quick and steady progress, leading his team to schedule Ahmed’s discharge for Tuesday, 22 October.

At home, Ahmed will still be unable to put any weight on his right arm and leg for two to three months; thus he will be using a wheelchair both in and out of the house. He will have in-home physical, occupational, recreational, and speech therapy for an unspecified amount of time and will probably switch to outpatient therapies at Mary Free Bed when he is considered ready for that.

Although Ahmed has a long road of healing ahead of him, we are both extremely grateful that his injuries were not any worse and that his rehabilitation is going so well.

We do, however, have some financial concerns that we must acknowledge. Although it is unknown exactly how long his recovery will be, the surgeon and therapists have indicated that Ahmed will be unable to work his factory job for approximately six months. This essentially cuts our household income by two-thirds at this time. As an adjunct professor, I work on semester-long contracts; therefore, my current income is only guaranteed through December, and I will not know until December what my offer—should I get one—will be for January through April. Because of Ahmed’s therapies, doctor appointments, and needs for assistance in the home, I will be unable to work a second job to try to make up for his loss of income. In addition, on one of my recent returns home after a day of therapies and visiting with Ahmed, another car struck my car in a roundabout, causing enough damage for my car to be totaled. So at the same time we settle Ahmed back into the house, I have to find another car right away—an unplanned and un-budgeted-for purchase at an inopportune time.

We know that we have a lot to learn from these challenges, and we look forward to coming through this time with strength, peace, and faith. We value your prayers and good thoughts and cherish every kindness that comes our way.

Sincerely,

Ahmed Mahran and Brandy Springstubbe
