This is Shawn, he's my husband of 27 years this week! He was born with a genetic condition called Sticklers Syndrome that took his left eye when he was 2. When our son was 2 weeks old, the retina in his right eye detached for the first time. Over the following 3 years he had 11 surgeries to keep it in place and retain some kind of vision. That was 24 years ago. The past few years his vision went from 20/400, which is kinda like blurry fuzzy blob at close proximity to light sensitivity. Monday even that disappeared. The eye became painful and after consultation with his ophthalmologist who is an ophthalmic surgeon it was determined the eye was in end stage eye. That is the point which the non functional eye, due to trauma starts to die off. Typically a very painful process. He was to see the doctor again the following day to discuss next steps and pain management. Thursday when a friend came to pick Shawn up for that appointment, he was covered in blood from the eye and unaware of it. The pain had increased exponentially and I left work as soon as I found out. We rushed down to Yale New Haven and after some confusion he was sent and then admitted to the emergency room. The doctors at the DANA branch of Yale New Haven patched the eye in hopes of would hold as they decided how to proceed. It was determined that the cornea had ruptured causing the eye to de-pressurize and there was bleeding from the retina as well. They finally decided today that the eye would be removed, a decision we anticipated and have prepared for mentally for years understanding this condition.
Between the time I'm going to be out of work, the medical bills from what Medicare won't cover and the fees that are adding up, we're feeling the hit. Anything you could help with would be a blessing to our family and we understand if it's not possible. If you could share our story, so at least those who don't know about the disorder can see they aren't alone in the struggle it would be greatly appreciated.
