Hello, my name is Elena Loera and I'm preparing this GoFundMe for my family and it's the only account we've created. As some of you may know, my cousin Rusty (Russell Claborn) was in a motorcycle accident on May 27th, 2022 on the 101 freeway. By the grace of God and the amazing strangers that stopped to assist him on that day, he survived his accident. He was placed in an induced coma for over a week, and at that time based on the numerous tests, we thought the only issues he had were many fractures, cuts, and scrapes. But upon further testing and less swelling, we were finally able to see he did suffer a Traumatic Brain Injury which was why it took him longer than predicted to wake from his coma. At this point it’s going to take time and rehabilitation to fully grasp the extent of his brain injury but each day this week we have seen him make positive and encouraging strides. He had a tracheotomy to help his facial fractures heal better and this week they have weened him off the ventilator and is breathing on his own now. He also began talking today, some words are harder to understand but we can hear many of them and he sounds like good old Rusty. He is responding with the appropriate responses; he can recognize each of us and has even dropped some of his more colorful language he’s known to use. He has done a lot of healing over the course of the few weeks, and he has a long road ahead of him. He is currently in the process of being transferred out to a rehabilitation hospital called Kindred Hospital in the L.A. area sometime soon. This unfortunately comes with many expenses for hotel/Airbnb, food, gas, and any medical expenses that may not be covered by insurance. We don’t know how long he’ll need to be hospitalized at this moment so we can’t anticipate how much will be needed but any amount that you can offer would be greatly appreciated as well as prayers and keeping him and his family in your thoughts. We will continue to share his journey of healing and recovery because we know he has so many people that know and love him. We thank you all for sending your love, support, and prayers during this difficult time. We would also like to thank his team of doctors and nurses from the E.R. and I.C.U. at Marian Regional Medical Center, they have done a great job of taking care of him. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts, God bless you all!
