Hi my name is Haya Shtieh, and in collaboration with the Jordanian Paramedic Society and Reclaim Childhood NGO, I am aiming to raise enough money to provide refugees and orphans in Jordan with the medical resources they need...
Having grown up with the immense privilege of access to education, healthcare, and other essential resources, I am aware of the vast disparities that exist in my society. This awareness has instilled in me a deep sense of duty to contribute meaningfully and sustainably, especially to communities that have long been underserved. I believe that privilege must be met with purpose, and this initiative is one way to transform that purpose into action.
Equipping children from vulnerable communities with basic first aid skills is not merely an educational endeavour—it is a life-saving imperative. Up to 59% of deaths from injuries could be prevented if first aid were administered before emergency services arrive. In Jordan, the need for such training is pronounced; a study at Yarmouk University revealed that only 29.2% of students had prior first aid experience, and a mere 11% knew the normal adult respiration rate . These figures highlight a significant gap in emergency preparedness.
By providing first aid training, we empower individuals to act decisively in critical moments, potentially reducing fatalities from common emergencies where survival chances decrease by 10% with each minute of delay . This initiative not only creates essential medical skills but also fosters a culture of proactive health awareness and community resilience.
Beyond the immediate ability to save lives, this kind of training fosters awareness around the importance of healthcare, encourages community leadership, and may even inspire some to pursue careers in medical or humanitarian fields. These are the kinds of small interventions that can create ripples of long-term change, especially in communities that lack so much.
