Media Solidarity-Support for free press in Belarus

Belarusian authorities launched an unprecedented attack on independent media and journalists.
All across the country, journalists are being arrested and put in jail for merely doing their work. They are accused and found guilty in ‘participation in mass gatherings’ while in fact their only function is to report from them. Authorities have blocked dozens of independent websites for their truthful accounts of beatings, tortures and election fraud. Financial and tax authorities enter the offices of media publishers for unscheduled checks while publishers themselves get arrested on criminal charges. Advertisers, fearing political repercussions, withdraw their advertising contracts. The Commission ‘on informational security’ has deprived of accreditation well-known and respected journalists, who worked for foreign media in Belarus. The state Printing House and kiosks hinders independent newspapers’ publishing and distribution. On September 7, the Ministry of Information issued a second warning to TUT.BY largest independent portal, which may result in postponing its activities for up to one year.
The Belarusian government thinks that it can suffocate freedom of expression and freedom of press by intimidating journalists, banning live streams or creating unbearable economic conditions for media. But it will not succeed in that.
We have received hundreds of requests to include into BY_Help fundraising support to independent journalists, whose work makes it possible for Belarus and world to learn about what’s happening in Belarus. Therefore we launch a new campaign – Media Solidarity, a fundraiser to support independent Belarusian journalists and media. The organizers and supervisors of the campaign are BY_Help’s team based outside Belarus: Andrei Stryzhak, Laksej Lavoncyk, Aliaksandr Lapko, Nadzeya Norton and Ales Čarniakovič.
The raised funds will be spent on:
- Protective equipment for journalists. We know that OMON cynically targets female and male journalists whose only protection often is their PRESS vest.
- Stipends and one-time financial support for journalists, suffering from repressions for their work for independent media. This includes regular and freelance reporters as well as other media workers.
- Temporary relocation for those that are threatened most.
- Support to newsrooms and media organizations that are looking for new legal income sources.

Las autoridades bielorrusas lanzaron un ataque sin precedentes contra periodistas y medios independientes.
En todo el país, los periodistas son arrestados y encarcelados simplemente por hacer su trabajo. Son acusados y declarados culpables de "participación en concentraciones masivas", cuando en realidad su única función es informar sobre ello.
Las autoridades han bloqueado docenas de sitios web independientes por sus relatos veraces de palizas, torturas y fraude electoral. Las autoridades financieras y fiscales investigan a las oficinas de los editores de medios en busca de controles no programados, mientras que los propios editores son arrestados por cargos criminales. Los anunciantes, por temor a repercusiones políticas, retiran sus contratos publicitarios. La Comisión "sobre seguridad de la información" ha privado de acreditación a periodistas reconocidos y respetados que trabajaban para medios extranjeros en Bielorrusia. La Imprenta y los quioscos estatales obstaculizan la publicación y distribución de periódicos independientes. El 7 de septiembre, el Ministerio de Información emitió una segunda advertencia al portal independiente más grande de TUT.BY, que puede resultar en la postergación de sus actividades hasta por un año.
El gobierno bielorruso cree que puede sofocar la libertad de expresión y la libertad de prensa intimidando a los periodistas, prohibiendo las transmisiones en vivo o creando condiciones económicas insoportables para los medios de comunicación. Pero no lo conseguirá.
Hemos recibido cientos de solicitudes para incluir en BY_Help el apoyo a la recaudación de fondos para periodistas independientes, cuyo trabajo hace posible que Bielorrusia y el mundo conozcan lo que está sucediendo allí. Por lo tanto, lanzamos una nueva campaña: Media Solidarity, una recaudación de fondos para apoyar a los periodistas y medios independientes bielorrusos. Свободные медиа и журналисты стали очередной целью репрессий белорусского режима.
По всей Беларуси в СИЗО и тюрьмы сажают журналистов, которых за их работу обвиняют в координации массовых беспорядков. Власти заблокировали десятки независимых сайтов и вменяют им в вину публикацию правды о пытках, избиениях и фальсификациях. В офисы издателей СМИ приходят финансовые проверки, а на их владельцев заводят уголовные дела. Рекламодатели боятся политических последствий и отзывают контракты. Комиссия по «инфобезопасности» лишила аккредитаций блестящих белорусских сотрудников иностранных СМИ. Дом печати и киоски отказывают в публикации и распространении независимых газет. 7 сентября второе предупреждение от Министерства информации получил ведущий независимый портал TUT.BY, которому за это грозит приостановка деятельности. Власти думают, что могут задушить свободу слова, пригрозив журналистам, запретив стримы или поставив СМИ в невыносимые финансовые условия. Но им это не удастся.
Мы получили сотни запросов расширить сбор средств BY_Help на независимых журналистов, от работы которых зависит, узнаем ли мы с вами и мир о том, что происходит с Беларусью здесь и сейчас. Поэтому мы запускаем отдельную кампанию – сбор средств в поддержку независимых беларуских медиа - Media Solidarity. На что пойдут собранные средства:
- Защитные средства для журналистов. Мы знаем, что ОМОН цинично целится в журналисток и журналистов, единственной защитой которых порой является жилетка «Пресса».
- Стипендии и пособия журналистам, подвергнувшимся репрессиям за работу в независимых медиа: штатным, фрилансерам, а также другим медиаработникам.
- Оплату временной релокации для тех, кому угрожают больше всего.
- Помощь СМИ и редакциям, журналистским организациям, которые ищут новые легальные источники дохода.
