Media can seem like an exclusive world. We aim to change that.
The Media Girlfriends scholarship exists to encourage and support young women and non-binary students to study a major related to media, with a career in journalism or storytelling in mind.
Upon acceptance to a university or college program, the recipient will receive this award. They will also have the opportunity to meet with members of the Media Girlfriends network. Our inaugural scholarship for 2020 raised $14,000. For the second scholarship we have a larger goal of $20,000 CAD (for two scholarships).
As a contributor, we'll keep you posted on the scholarship launch in 2021, as well as provide updates throughout the process, and letters from the winners. We believe Canadian media is stronger with a wider range of perspectives, particularly from those who are Black, Indigenous and people of colour.
Media Girlfriends started in 2016, as a podcast created by Nana aba Duncan. The hashtag #MediaGirlfriends has grown to include peer mentorship on social media and in real life, including events. The next season of the podcast will focus on leadership, as part of Nana aba's William Southam Journalism Massey Fellowship research.
The scholarship will launch in early 2021. Media Girlfriends is administrating the scholarship, and will hold the funds in a bank account until the cheques are issued to the scholarship winners in fall of 2021. We will provide updates on any transactions involving the funds through GoFundMe updates. Thanks again for your support.
* We use an inclusive definition of women, which includes trans women, genderqueer and non-binary folks.
