New Integrated Skateboard Spot Announcement - Go Fund Me Request

There has been explosive growth internationally with skateboarding especially with it being added to the 2020 Summer Olympics.  This growth has been seen locally with the very active Medicine Hat Skateboard Association (MHSA). There is a need for a new spot for it’s recently announced initiative - Integrated Skate Spots.  A spot across from McCoy school, overlooking the river is a premiere location and will not only benefit skateboarders in Crescent Heights, but will be used by skateboarders from across the City. MHSA president Chris Nickel said “The skateboard community in Medicine Hat has struggled to keep up with the demand when it comes to skateboard infrastructure.  The existing Kinsmen Skate Plaza park is crowded. And, the demand continues to grow, especially with programs like SkateSkool where teenagers provide skateboard instruction to kids 5-12 years old.”

This project has a budget of $125,000.  The Medicine Hat Kinsmen stepped up early to support this project with a $20,000 donation.  We have also seen Capstone Concrete show leadership by donating $20,000 gifts in kind. There is a further $20,000 in provincial CFEP funds. And, $20,000 from the City of Medicine Hat.  The leading designer of skateboard parks - Newline SkateParks has donated the $15,000 design work for this project because they believe in the work that the MHSA does in the skateboard community.   Capstone Concrete partner Adam Coehoorn said “As a Medicine Hat company, we are excited to be able to support the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association and the great work they do in our community. What these skateboarders do not only supports the skateboard community, but the community as a whole.  As a skateboarder myself, we are excited to be able to be part of this project and to be able to give back to the youth of Medicine Hat”.

Currently, there is a $25,000 budget shortfall to bring this project to reality.  The young people of the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association is requesting the support of the community to be able to make this project a reality.

About Integrated Skate Spots :
The Medicine Hat Skateboard Assoc has a vision of what we call “Integrated Skateboard Spots”.  These would be skateboard spots located throughout the City where local kids who can’t make it down to the Kinsmen Skate Plaza at Kin Coulee can skate.  We launched our first Integrated Skateboard Spot at the Saamis Rotary Park in the fall of 2018.
We learned a lot in that first project and are prepared to take the concept to a whole new level with our next project.

About the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association :
The MHSA works hard to be involved in our community throughout the year.  That includes providing skateboard opportunities for kids through programs like SkateSkool.  Or annual competitions like the July 1 Beat the Heat competition. It also is a priority of our organization to mobilize our skateboard  community to volunteer with and outside of Medicine Hat. This includes volunteering for local organizations like the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank, the Medicine Hat Womens Shelter, Medicine Hat Cares, The Prairie Gleaners or by picking up garbage on Earth Day.  The Medicine Hat Skateboard Association is passionate about skateboarding and about helping out others in need.
