Med Supplies for Daraja Hospital
Donation protected
I'm hoping to raise money to buy much needed medical supplies and medications to support the health center where I've been volunteering the past couple weeks. I only have 2 weeks to raise money and purchase supplies, and any and all help would be greatly apprappreciated, even if all you can spare is $5.
Despite whatever flaws may persist in our healthcare systems, this experience has made me realize just how unbelievably lucky we are to have access to reliable, safe, effective, and hygienic health care. Folks around here are not so fortunate. Fetal heart tones are assessed through an archaic fetascope, gloves are used sparingly, and medications are not always available to provide for patients. The nurses share 2 stethoscopes, scissors are dull and rusty, and needles are in such short supply they are often used repeatedly on the same patient.
With help from the staff I have compiled a list of items I would like to buy for the hospital, including a fetal Doppler moniter, a reliable scale, medications, stethoscopes, and watches (for timing contractions), as well as new (rust-free) scissors, hemostats, and forceps, and other miscellaneous medical supplies . I went to the local pharmacy and medical supply store to price out these items and based my fund raising goal on the prices quoted. First $250 goes to the Fetal Doppler monitor and then I will work my way through the list based on priority needed items. If I am fortunate to exceed the goal all additional money will go to buying more supplies and medications for the health center.
Some information about the location: Daraja II (Daraja mbili) health center is a small facility serving a local community in Arusha, Tanzania. The health center mainly supports pre- and post-natal care, delivery, vaccinations, and wound care, as well as managing local medical emergencies. Resources within the health center are limited, as are basic medical supplies and medications.
Thank you all in advance. Every dollar goes a long way here so please consider giving, even if only a little bit. Asante sana!
