I recently returned to New York with a heavy heart after learning that my mother suffered a stroke and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. We are trusting in God and hoping that doors will open for benefits to help her, but the process is slow and complicated, especially in Puerto Rico where resources are limited.

My brother is currently caring for both of our parents, but he needs to focus most of his attention on our mother’s care. My father, who is 90 years old, is able to shave and dress himself, but he cannot cook for himself. He has no fingers and his hands tremble, making meal preparation impossible. We have found someone who is willing to prepare meals for him at a reasonable cost, but we need help covering this expense until we can secure VA benefits for my father. I have already started the process of applying for his DD214 so my brother can take him to the VA in Ponce, but it will take time.
