On Friday, December 13th, while out for a morning run, our friend and colleague, Meaghan Onofrey suffered a massive stroke at 40 years old. Since then, she’s been under the best care imaginable at Mt. Sinai in New York City. It’s been long and winding road to recovery (read about it here ) and after three rounds in the Neurosurgical ICU Meaghan is finally in Mt. Sinai's in-house stroke rehabilitation program. Meaghan’s amazing husband, Nick, hasn’t left her side, not once.
That is, until April 2 when, because of COVID-19, Mt. Sinai could no longer let him go to the hospital. And now, it looks as though Nick will be asked to take Meaghan home before anyone agrees that she’s ready. Hospital space in New York City's was at a premium and it wasn't safe for her to be at Mt. Sinai any longer. Nick, all by himself, set up a full rehabilitation facility, including physical and occupational therapy in their home.
Under the best circumstances, home rehab means months of private-hire therapists, special equipment, and modifications to the apartment so that Meaghan can move around comfortably. The expenses are adding up quickly.
As you know, Meaghan is a special person. Whether it's being the best mom in the world to Ben and Catherine, loving wife to the amazing Nick, devoted daughter to Maureen, incredible friend, contributor to her community, or much loved colleague, Meaghan’s generosity is boundless, her energy limitless, her resourcefulness astounding, and her heart immense. It’s still hard to believe that this has happened to her.
So many of you have asked how you can make a meaningful contribution to Meaghan’s recovery. The answer is that we can help the Onofrey family to stay fully focused on Meaghan's rehabilitation, without the worries of how to fund what she needs to continue getting better.
