homodoxy's first book

Hellooo!

A few years ago, I started homodoxy.com to share some of my work on theology, gay literature, and queer theory during grad school. As I've begun to work on my dissertation on gay theology, liberation, AIDS, and the church, I've seen how gay and queer people have started their own presses to publish their own work and that of their friends. I'd like to try that with homodoxy!

The first book I'd like to publish, Coarse Work: Essays on Theology and Gay Life, is a collection of my writings—some of which have already been available on homodoxy, some of which were written during my graduate school, and perhaps some journal entries from college. In each of the sections, I am focusing on the same questions: How should a gay Christian live? How should a gay Christian person tell their story? Is it possible to live gayly and Christianly without investing in popular schemas of gay Christian life (e.g., primarily, Side A vs. Side B)? Is it possible for celibate gays, married gays, and promiscuous gays to find common ground? In each section of the book, I engage these questions in different ways. While I expect this book will be most interesting to people who already know my work, anyone interested in those questions may enjoy it.

I would like Coarse Work to be an end in itself (part distribution of ideas, part documenting where I've been thus far in my theology and writing journey), as well as a trial run to see if I might want to publish more works under homodoxy on a project-by-project basis.

The first run will be about 150 to 200 books. I'd like it to be small enough that I can number each copy and write a little thank you note to every buyer. But I would like it to look professionally done. I've figured out how to create a manuscript on Microsoft Word and cover art on Canva. The printer will be Bookmobile, which prints books for presses like Graywolf and Coffe House. The ISBN for the book, which I have purchased, cost $125. The max number of books I would order is 200, and that would cost $1,400. So a total of $1,525. Any excess funds will be set aside for future homodoxy projects.

For a little more info about the project, go to the project's page at homodoxy.

If you donate $10 or more, fill out this form using the same email address, and I will send you a copy of the book when it is published—this will count as your purchase. (If you've already filled the interest form out, fill it out again with your shipping address after donating). Don't leave your donation anonymous if that is what you would like, but it doesn't need to be public. You can order up to 3 books this way. $30 = 3 books. $100 = 3 books. I hope to use GoFundMe to fund the printing and then to sell the remainder of the books on a sliding scale to keep them affordable. I will also be donating copies to some Christian college libraries.
