Help Mary Deane Achieve Her Dream

Donation protected
My name is Mary Deane. I'm 14 years old and I'm in the 10th grade at Robbins Homeschool Academy. I have lived in and around Charleston, SC my entire life. I am very active in my church, Summerville Presbyterian Church, and have been selected to be on the 2016 Montreat Middle School Conference Planning Team. I am a Girl Scout and have been active in a troop since I was 5 years old.

My passion is musical theater (and any theater in general, really). I enjoy it so much because I can be anyone when I'm on stage. I can turn into anyone I want to turn into. Even if I have a set character that I'm acting out, I can still take that character and make her or him original! Theater brings me so much happiness; even when I've had the worst day ever, as soon as I get on stage I can escape into the world of the character I'm playing. I can entertain people and bring them along into the world of the show.

I've been in six theatrical performance shows so far, not including the many shows and performances in my church and at camps (like Music and Drama camp and the Montreat Music Conference). At South of Broadway Theater Company, I was in "Merry Medieval Holiday Show" as Abel, "Seussical The Muscial Jr." as Sour Kangaroo, and "Dragonsong" as Mavi. At Woolfe Street Playhouse I have been in "13! The Musical" and "Urinetown The Musical" as a part of the ensemble, as well as "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" as Olive Ostrovsky. These have been wonderful experiences and opportunities. Charleston, SC has a great theater community for a city of its size.

I have the amazing opportunity of going to the Summer In The City program for three weeks in June. With Summer in the City, I will have the privilege to spend those three weeks at the Juilliard School and other venues in New York City studying musical theater. I will get to learn from and train with professional voice trainers, acting coaches, stage combat instructors, and improvisation artists. I will also have many workshops, seminars, and sessions with agent and casting directors. The program also will give me the opportunity to form connections and relations ships to build a network of contacts in New York (and elsewhere) that I would not be able to do in Charleston alone. From the experiences in Summer In The City, I hope to improve the breadth and depth of my abilities, gain more skills and knowledge in my vocal and acting talents, as well as gain insight and direction on how to pursue my dream of a musical theater career.

The opportunity is so special to me because it incorporates so much of what I love: New York City, music, theater, Broadway, travel, expanding my boundaries, and pushing past my comfort zone.It has been a dream for a while to go to New York City and study under professionals so that I would be able to learn and grow in my career choice. I love the atmosphere of the city and being able to experience so many different cultures in one place. I love the idea of going to Broadway shows and thinking that, one day, I could be up on that stage doing what I love.

That brings me to the reason for this GoFundMe and how you can help. We are a single income family of six and this opportunity comes with several costs attached that we need help covering. The total goal for this campaign is $7,000 and it includes $3,800 in tuition, $1,400 in room and board, $800 in travel expenses, and more to cover incidentals (and the GoFundMe fees).

Any amount that you can donate is both greatly helpful and greatly appreciated. I need to raise all the money for the tuition and the room and board by April 30th. The rest of the money needs to be raised by May 15th.

100% of the amount raised will go to covering the expenses of the Summer In The City program. Any amount raised over and above the needed amount will be donated to Girl Scout Camp Sandy Ridge in Bennettsville, SC.
