MCR Street Poem, Core costs, year 1

Tax deductible
Manchester Street Poem began in 2016 in response to the homelessness crisis in our city. We produced our first art installation for Manchester International Festival in July 2017 and have created further installations since then, growing our community in the process whilst building our platform.

We help bring people of different backgrounds with experience of homelessness, marginalisation or isolation together through the shared practice of story-telling and art. It is a creative space where people who may often have felt ignored can come together and be heard; where experiences are shared, stories told and problems solved. The aim? A healthy frame of mind where we can take control of our own lives and find our place in the world.

Our art is created in our workshops. These usually take place face to face, but during the dangerous and isolating period of the pandemic, we have met and taken our work online, where this caring, connected and creative community has been a life-saver to many of us, helping us to keep going during a time of great vulnerability.

We became a charity in June 2020 with the intention that this status would enable us to sustain our activity in the absence of a calendar of arts events. However, the reality of being a charity in its first year is that although we want to focus on the big, long term strategic planning, we are delivering activity each week so have little capacity to plan ahead and fully embrace all the opportunities coming our way.

We are currently maintaining provision through a series of small community grants and private donations. However, this is not sustainable in the long term and to continue our work, develop as an organisation and help new people who would benefit from our support, Manchester Street Poem needs to fund its activities.

Around £20,000 will give us the ability to deliver on our 18-month vision, to rent a space to be the hub of our activities as we ease out of lockdown, to source the connective technology required by our communities and secure, train and develop the team that will be the future of our project.

We have developed a model for community where all voices are equal, a safe space to recover and grow, to explore our creativity and where it is OK to be vulnerable. Our goal is to share what we know with anyone who’ll listen. We would love to see Street Poems popping up across the country, maybe all over the world. A blueprint for a better society? Maybe, but without the breathing space to develop on our own terms we’ll never know.

Thank you for taking the time to read about Manchester Street Poem. We would be very grateful if you would consider supporting our work by making a donation of any size and letting your friends know about us...Thank you
