Franklin High School has recently heard that an icon has come down with a disease that has hurt so many within our country. According to the CDC, in 2016, a total of 1,658,716 new cancer cases were reported in the United States: 833,308 among males and 825,408 among females.

Coach Montes has coached for over 40 years within the El Paso area and was part of the coaching staff who prepped World Champion Burt Cameron for the 1984 Olympic Games. He has coached at Franklin High School for over 24 years. He was the captain for the men’s soccer team at the University of Texas at El Paso who won the BYU tournament and made the all-star team two years in a row. He also coached the El Paso select against the Mexican Women’s Senior National Team in 2002 with a record for the fastest goal scored by a US team against Mexico’s Women’s Senior National Team in less than 6 minutes.

Coach Montes has led Franklin HS to district titles (2000, 2001, 2002, 2008, & 2015), bi-district titles (2000, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2014, 2015, & 2017), area championships (2000, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2008, & 2017), and 2008 Sweet 16. He also led a 3A high school (Canutillo HS) to compete against 5A district competition to district, bi-district, and area titles in the early 1990's. Coach Gilbert Montes has been voted by coaches as coach of the year for El Paso in 1993, 2003, & 2015. He has coached from 1993-2008 at Southern Methodist University Summer Camps and has won one adult division I state championship with El Paso International. Much of his local talent have been recognized as city MVP's and have been named to all district teams.

Since 1978, Coach Montes has led "Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl " and has also been nominated to "Who's Who Among America's Teachers". Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl have performed in venues that the great Lola Beltran and Linda Ronstadt have performed in.

He is most proud of the local talent within El Paso as many of his players and managers have a tremendous record of attending universities and completing their degrees at prestigious universities, which include: The Ohio State, Columbia, University of Houston, Texas Tech, New York University, University of Texas at Austin, Texas Christian University, Baylor, Air Force Academy, Stanford, Notre Dame, University of Nevada – Las Vegas, New Mexico State, University of Texas-El Paso, & Texas A & M. Coach Montes is a leader & a beacon of hope within the El Paso community servicing over 1000 soccer players in the El Paso Area. Any help will go very far and all the support is greatly appreciated by his family. The treatment he will be receiving consists of six chemotherapies and one radiation treatment to combat the disease. The treatments consist of one treatment every three weeks and each treatment lasts for one day from 8AM – 5PM. Funds will be used for costly medication and time off of work.

Average costs for treatment run in the $150,000 range. The reasons aren’t mysterious. Cancers occur at the cellular level, with abnormal cells dividing and spreading. Containing the cancer and killing those abnormal cells without damaging nearby healthy cells often requires a range of treatments over an extended period of time — lengthy radiation, complicated surgeries, costly chemotherapy, plus other strong medications to supercharge your immunity. New cancer treatments emerge routinely, but with new hope comes even more cost: 11 of the 12 cancer drugs that the Food and Drug Administration approved in 2012 were priced at more than $100,000 per year. The chemotherapy diminishes the immune system, combats the cancer cells, &  affects the human body.
