Hi everyone! We want to start out by telling you a little bit about the reason we are pursuing IVF with PGS/PGD and what that is exactly.
We had our first son in 2007, Ethan James. He was so handsome with the most beautiful blue eyes! When Ethan was about 8 months old, he was diagnosed with Gaucher Disease Type 2. Gaucher Disease is a rare genetic disorder and unfortunately Type 2 is terminal. Ethan lost his hard fought battle with Gaucher Disease in 2009. Since this disease is genetically inherited from both parents, we have been very hesitant to try for another baby.
Until now!! We recently found that our health insurance does have some coverage for IVF services and PGS/PGD services! This is very exciting news for us!! PGS/PGD stand for Preimplantation Genetic Screening/Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis. What this means is we can go through the IVF process and they will be able to test our embryos to see if they are affected by Gaucher Disease prior to implantation… OMG!?! Why couldn’t we have found this sooner? This is awesome news! :)
We did start this overwhelming process very recently. For those of you that know us, we’re not ones to ask for help. It just doesn’t feel right sometimes. But, this is something we’ve both wanted for a very long time. So…we need your help. This is going to be a long expensive process. A typical IVF cyclecan cost anywhere $10,000-$12,000. This doesn’t include the medications or the additional genetic testing we’re having done. We’re asking for just a little help with a portion of these costs. We are excited at the possibilities this could bring for our family and hopefully become a family of three again very soon.
