Hi my name is Annie and McKenna is my five year old daughter. McKenna was born with hypoplastic right heart syndrome (HRHS) half of a heart, CHARGE syndrome, and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy after a brain injury from her first open heart surgery at five days old. CHARGE syndrome and cerebral palsy affect McKenna’s muscles as well as her balance, which made it hard for her to sit, crawl, and be more independent while growing. With having half of a heart, she lacked stamina and endurance which in turn made using those muscles harder. I am so thankful to say that McKenna had a heart transplant last June (2022) and is thriving! She has more energy than ever and wants to do new things, like standing unassisted! After talking with her doctors and current physical therapists, we have come to realize McKenna would GREATLY benefit from an intensive style physical therapy program to grow off of her already learned motor skills which sadly, our children’s hospital doesn’t offer requiring us to go out of state. Due to the need to travel out of state, her insurance won’t cover anything which would mean we have to pay completely out of pocket. As a single mom, I can’t do this myself but will do everything I can to get us to our goal. It’s my job as McKenna’s mom to help her reach her full potential, and I am so grateful that she has the strength to do all she’s wanting to do now but can’t because she doesn’t know how, and to be quite honest, I can only do so much to help her reach these goals (standing/walking) while ensuring her safety and using the proper equipment and techniques. If you’re able, please help me help McKenna reach her full potential. So many odds against her but she continues to prove them wrong! Thank you all!
