Wednesday, February 4th, 2015 at 8:45 pm Grayson Hardy came into this world. He was laid on his mother chest for a couple minutes for skin-to-skin contact. This is when Kayla noticed something was off. He was quickly taken off her chest and taken out of the room. They told the new parents that he will need to be flight for life to Salt Lake City for heart surgery in the morning. They cleaned up Kayla and little over an hour later they discharged the new mom from the hospital. They gave her very little to no information on how to take care of her self after birth and told the parents to drive up to the Primary Children’s Care Hospital in Salt Lake City from St. George, Utah. A couple hours into the drive they received a phone call that Grayson's vitals have dropped and they are not able to perform the surgery that morning. He was immediately put into the ICU and was scheduled to have surgery that Friday. Once again the surgery was rescheduled due to bowl obstructions and the right lung collapsing. During this process Grayson was diagnosed with transposition of the greater arteries as well as having four holes in his heart. They scheduled the surgery for Wednesday, February 11th. During this time the doctors hoped that they could get Grayson off the respirator and at least have Kayla and Chandler be able to hold him the day of surgery. The Hardy's asked a good friend who happened to be bishop to give Grayson a blessing and since then he has been improving. It was not to long after the blessing Grayson started breathing more on his own, was taken off the paralytic, opened his eyes, and was finally held by his parents. At 7 days old his first open heart surgery was considered a success and the doctors reported Grayson as a fighter. He will be going back into surgery in a couple days to close his chest cavity, as it is currently open so that the swelling can go down.
Last week Kayla and Chandler were excited to meet their son and start their next chapter in life as parents, this week they pray that they will be able to take him home in a month. They have asked for very little; however, they need all the help they can get. Any little thing is accepted. (If I know you and you have any baby clothes or what not and are looking of giving it away; I will take it. I will be heading back up to Salt Lake in a couple weeks and will be bringing the stuff with me.) Currently, they have very little clothing with them and live off hospital food, as they are not able to keep food at the place they are staying at.
