MCCSU Summer Enrichment Camp

Dear Future Sponsor,

Do you believe smarter summers equal brighter futures?

Ron Fairchild, the founder and CEO of the National Summer Learning Association noted that the American education system is dependent upon using the summer months to improve the learning outcome of children from low-income families who might not have access to educational resources throughout the summer months and for low-achieving students who need additional time to master academic content.

The Hechinger Report (ASDC, May 2018) reported from the National Center for Educational Statistics that there exists a real gap in educational achievement for low- income children that have no academics or enrichment during the summer months. Despite the statistical research and constant awareness, many children remain unable to receive the benefits of a summers learning and enrichment program due to cost.

In Cabarrus County, the Multi-Cultural Community Student Union (MCCSU) has been working with youth for over 30 years responding to educational, physical, spiritual, and emotional needs in our community during their “out of school time”.    The MCCSU’s Summer Enrichment program provides a free eight (8) week summer camp for over 100 students of low-income families. With the help of volunteers, certified teachers, and church supporters, children are provided with breakfast, lunch, a snack, free transportation to camp and a safe place to learn.  Our curriculum includes bible study, social skills, reading/math (EOG specific), swimming, movie trips, weekly library visits, crafts, arts (drama/dancing/art), community service projects, technology, cursive writing, entrepreneurship, exercise, field trips and recently a music education and marching band. Numerous speakers are invited to enhance the participant experience such as the police department, fire department, local business owners, authors, and other professionals.

This summer, we face a unique challenge in financially supporting our summer enrichment camp.  We ask your support for families who are not able to fund this experience.  For $200, you can support one student throughout their summer camp experience. However, any amount can assist in building a child’s future and help MCCSU to deliver on its mission to provide quality learning opportunities for young people during the summer months to continue their learning. The young children we nurture today are the foundation of our society tomorrow.  Yes, smarter summers equal brighter futures.

Will you help make a child’s dream come true?

Sincerely,

W. Ruth Brooks, CEO of MCCSU
